Am I being dumb - I have no picture in the viewfinder, but do on the LCD.
SDI Out is definitely switched off, so the vf should work
any ideas ?

There are two things that will come into play here -- first, yes, if EVF MODE is set to AUTO, then the EVF turns off when the LCD is opened; it's a power-saving feature. You can make the EVF and LCD on at all times by choosing EVF MODE set to ON.
But, even if you choose "ON", it can still not work if you have HD-SDI output turned on. If HD-SDI is turned on, then you can only have one or the other -- EVF or LCD. You can't have both, when HD-SDI is set to ON. But if you turn HD-SDI to OFF, then you can have simultaneous LCD, EVF, and HDMI outputs.
