No sound with Xpress DV!?

Hi everyone.
I recently got a new PC specifically and solely for running Avid Xpress DV, which so far i'm having some troubles with.
Apart from capture problems (still, even after getting the Avid approved firewire card), for some reason the program does not output any sound.
Now i know the PC's sound works fine, as I can play Cds with MediaPlayer, and have been able to edit succesfully with a budget program PowerDirector.
Also, I think the audio within the Avid program is working to some extent, as i can see Audio levels moving up and down on the audio meters etc, it's just that i can't hear anything.
I've looked through the manual and the help guides, but could not find anything to solve the problem.
Has anybody out there encountered a similar problem? Does anyone know of any possible solutions to this, or know what the problem might be?

I thank you for taking the time to read this post, and hope that you can help me out.
Many regards,
Alan

I didn't get a Sound Card when i got my new PC a few weeks ago, as when i was researching what components to get for it in order to run Avid Xpress DV, i never saw any requirments or reccomendations for one. I believe that my Motherboard has an on-board Sound Card (or something like one), which i assumed would be sufficiant.

If this is to be the problem, what would anybody suggest?

Also if this isn't the problem, any suggestions on how i would overcome it?

Many thanks and warm regards,
Alan

On board sound in most cases will work. There are some soundcards that don't work with Avid, so I thougt I'd start out by checking off the simple things.

Do you know what kind of onboard sound controller your motherboard has?

In the meantime, try opening a project in Avid, and then in the settings window choose Soundcard Configuration. In the new window that opens, select mute overide and then choose "front." See if that helps.

If not, then after Avid is open, open your soundcard control panel and see if anything is muted that would interfear with sound coming out of your speakers.

If that doesn't solve anything then try to figure out what type of onboard sound you have and post back.

Can someone tell if the internal sounddevice in the HP xw8200 work with Avid Xpress Pro HD?

Don't want to drag traffic away from this great message board, but you'll find a lot more answers via the Avid discussion boards at www.avid.com.
Good luck!

Just to update those who helped me out and those who might experience similar problems.
I was able to fix the sound issue by checking and altering the soundcard configuration setting within an avid project, and it now works fine - no need to buy a new soundcard!

I've yet to attempt burning projects to dvd though, i'm sure a new post will be up about that soon!
