Hey guys!

I don't post on here a whole lot - by virtue of I almost never get responses, heh - but I figure I'll give it another shot. Last weekend I completed a short film in the Dallas 24 Hour Video Race, entitled "No Rest for the Wicked". It's short (5 minutes long), a dark comedy, and is relatively technically competent. Shot on a Canon GL2 (no adapters) but I like the images I got out of it. So check it out!

Here's a link to multiple formats/media for it:

A little bit more info about the film and the race:

Guns. Mayhem. A dash of comedy.

That's what you get with 'No Rest For The Wicked', the fifth annual Atomic Productions entry into the Dallas 24-Hour Video Race. (2009)

When a ragtag team of four men stage an unprepared heist, trouble ensues.

This year the required elements were
-Theme: Misunderstanding
-Prop: Fruit or vegetable
-Location: Any street or traffic sign
-Line of Dialog: "the one on the left."

The movie couldn't be more than five minutes in length and had to be produced, as many of you already know, entirely in 24 hours. We wanted to do something a little different this year and deviate from our knack for overly-dramatic exposition following the lead-up to our epicfail 24 hour project, 'Kingdom Come'. This year we instead tried different things in every field- completely new actors, locations, different styles of music, different styles of writings, lots of new crew members, and took more creative liberties.

We think, even given these things, the movie came out exactly as we wanted it to- and even though this is the first year we didn't make the finals, win, or place; we're still proud of 'No Rest For The Wicked'.

There was a lot of very good in this clip especially since it was done in 24hrs......
I liked the locations. I liked the music. the rest was kind of hit or miss. Didnt like the way you used fruit while I was watching I found myself saying why is this guy eating an apple then I reread your needed prop. Some of the actors were well cast others didnt fit the part for me. Some of the dialog felt natural and flowed other seemed forced and contrived. Misunderstanding as a theme I didnt get it
seemed more like betrayal. On the technical side didnt like the cuts under the bridge didnt feel natural.(some jump cuts) didnt like the sound on dialog sounded like mic was to far from actors this gave a hollow tone to dialog gunshots didnt sound like they were in the same room as the dialog sounded much bigger much more reverb. muzzel flashes ranged from ok to poor and would have liked to see blood. I watched the youtube version and there was a lot of noise may just be from compression.

All that being said: I liked it and for a 24 hour project I would give it an A-
I hope you post more in the future

I loved your credits and the intro. I was super impressed right away. Again, the underpass scene was a little bit off. I wish that the thugs had went in gun blazing into the office. When the first shot went off, it was a bit jarring. But then everyone gets shot, and it lessens the impact. So, I probably just would have went balls out.

Oh, and your humor was really topical. I don't mind that for stuff like sketch comedy or late night monologues. But it doesn't really go well into movies. It takes away from their timeless quality. But, I will admit that "Shamwow, *****!" made me laugh out loud.

All in all, a very good job. Some minor issues, but it was 24 hours, so pretty understandable.

Thanks for the replies, guys! Very much appreciated!

We included the pear in there to be the first red flag that something wasn't quite right, that this film wasn't going to be completely serious. We have a (relatively small) following in different places locally and on the web, so the pear was the 'huh?' surprise to set off alarms that this wouldn't be a drama, that it would be........quirky, if you will.

In terms of the audio, our boom pole broke the day of the actual contest, and we found ourselves actually using my lighting boom (the boom operator almost died from the strain). When it came time to set up a kicker (to balance out the blown out windows) I improvised and just duct-taped the mic to a broom pole. Crude, but it worked-ish!

I've done a few 24 hour contests in the past, there's one thread on here from 2007 of a film of mine that never got reception, if you'd care to check it out:

Also, I've done two 48 hour projects that are pretty interesting, might wanna check those out too (SAG actors in these):

My group has actually gotten flak on other forums/sites for doing too much of the same style over and over again (it will become present if you watch the others films, it's a pretty effective style) so 'No Rest' was something new for us. Not the best actors, but I think it turned out alright.

Thanks again for the kind words!
