No Phantom Power for Mic

Tonight I was shooting interviews for the documentary I am working on, and I decided it would be a nice look to have the person holding the mic. Naturally I switched the 48V switch to ON for channel 2, etc, but it did not power up the mic.
I had to run it through my mixer, then to the input on the camera to get power for it, not wanting to waste any more time. That worked fine, so it is not the mic.
Question is: did I miss something in the settings that I need to turn on to ENABLE 48v phantom power? I was shooting with a battery, 24PA. I tried both channels and neither would power it...

Don't use a battery with the mic power turned on. That is why there is the 48v switch, so you don't have to use a battery. Using both is no bueno.

Try basic troubleshooting.

Did you switch cam input to that channel or only turn the phantom power on?
Did you plug in mic fiist, then turn phantom power on?
Did you actually turn on mic?
Did you have camera turned on when you were trying to use mic phantom power? Did it go into sleep mode?

There is no trick to this.

Tried using AC, yes, no difference. The channel selection was correct, and I ended up trying both. Mic was plugged in first, then power turned on, and cam was NOT in sleep mode. This mic has NO on off switch. In short, I have tried everything suggested during trouble shooting, it makes no difference, there is NO POWER getting to the mic. I tried other mics as well. However, they ALL work when run through the board, then into the camera, so obviously, the mics are able too accept 48V, and this is the only time I have ever had any problem with any of them.

cassese what i meant was do you have a battery in the microphone? if so take it out.

I am an idiot

I am an idiot

Thanks for all the help. I found the problem.
On the front of the camera there are two switches, settings for MIC or LINE, I had them set to line. I switched to mic and even withthe battery in instead of AC power the mics are powered fine now.
one more example of idiocy at it's finest - which I find myself guilty of on this auspicous occasion!
I can see the point though of using AC instead for battery life while shooting, point taken there.
Also, today I recieved Barry's book and DVD, and as you all mntioned, there is a wealth of info I am delving into right now. Also recieved Vegas today so I will be a busy boy.
Apologies to all who helped me.

That mic/line switch has tripped up many a DVXUser, so you are not alone!

On the new HVX they're changing it all to one switch, which should be less confusing. It'll be a three-position slider, with "line", "mic + phantom", and "mic + no phantom". Cleaner and simpler design, less room for confusion.

Glad you're liking the book! :)

You don't mean that there will be one switch for both inputs, do you? You mean combining the phantom and level switch right? Still have separate settings for each channel I hope.

Yes, both the book and DVD will not be able to be absorbed for several days, I can see that. It also reinforces what everyone has always been telling me - that there is no right or wrong, only experimentation to get the look you want - save specific purposes such as film out requirements, etc.
I did want to mention though that it took forever to get here, probably because I ordered through Amazon? They obviously have a drop-ship arrangement with you, cause the return address was from you in Las Vegas. I don't even want to know how much money I could have saved ordering directly from you.
In essence, in the short time I have had the camera, every day has been a learning curve challenge. It really reminds me of when I bought my first "real" 35 mm", a Konica T4 w 1.2 50mm lense, all manual. This cam however has ten times the control variations and complex relationships between the settings that require abstract thinking to get the shot you are looking for. I don't mind, but I am the impatient sort by nature...I have had to temper my impatience over the years with wisdom that the end result is more important. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

You are correct. One switch for each channel. Line/mic/phantom all combined on each switch. Every bit as much control as the DVX has, just streamlined.

"standard" shipping through Amazon is Media Mail. I ship the items same day I get the order, but Media Mail is a very low priority service. Many people who order using "expedited" shipping get the item next day or two days, because "expedited" means Priority Mail. It's $2.50 different, but it makes a huge difference in how quickly the post office delivers the item. It makes no difference to me, I ship 'em same day either way.

Not a penny. Everywhere it's the exact same price. The only way to save anything is to watch the ebay auction; I have it listed at $68.95 on ebay with a buy-it-now of $69.95. But everywhere it's the same -- ebay, amazon, Hello World, Abel Cine Tech (both NY and LA), Birns & Sawyer, or right here at DVXUser. Buying through DVXUser helps support this site; buying from Hello World, Birns & Sawyer, or Abel gives people an option of walking into the store and picking it up right away. Getting it through Amazon gives people more paying options, especially for international customers. But it's all always the same price (unless you buy a new DVX from an authorized reseller, in which case you get it free!)

I am glad I did my part Barry to support your exhorbitant lifestyle in some small way. I would have preferred to support the site, however, I take comfort knowing that next month's Porsche payment has been fortified by my humble purchase. I noticed that you spared no expense on the paper in the book; it will be able to take it's place next to the original King James version of the bible in just a few short years, instead of waiting the full 1700 years the bible had to wait to reach the same decay level. (End of humor passage)
On the plus side, information is the most valuable commodity; I initially reeled at the price - but now I see it is indeed worth it. Nice job on the DVD as well. You have enlightened me to a new level of competence.

I like the paper, easy to read, can make notes on it, and the book is small/light enough to go in my location kit. The book should not outlast the camera anyway, so 20-30 years should be enough.
