NO PAL support (25fps) for the EOS 1D-C at 4K

It is a big concern.... I am hoping that it is some kind of oversight. 4:2:0 in 1080P seems very stupid too.

I want to avoid using external drives... and wont always need 4K

4:2:0 so a s not to cannibalise c300 maybe?

hopefully 25p added in firmware, they did it for the 5d did they not?

Seems pretty obvious that only Hollywood seems to matter to Canon at this point.
Well, as far as any Cinema EOS products go, it should seem obvious. Hollywood is exactly who they are marketing to, and only to. They haven't made that a secret, they've instead trumpeted it.

Well it might be obvious, but it is also incredibly stupid.
RED is everywhere here in Europe now, and have just opened an affiliated office in the UK.
It was not an afterthought on the EPIC, the Scarlet, the FS700, the Sony F3, the Alexa or even the Canon C300.

So basically it makes no sense at all from a marketing standpoint.

Somewhere canon has lost the plot , for the money you spend on the camera it should have the everything including the sink.........:)

But the C300 has PAL support. Must be an oversight in the press release info?

After all Europe, Australia, most of Asia, most of Africa, Brazil, Russia, India & China are all PAL. Surely they've herd of those places. Those last 3 countries are pretty big....

No, it is not an oversight (and that would be saying something too), they are very specific here:
http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/technical/eos_1d_c_explained.do

Perhaps they have decided that this camera is destined for the Cinema and that is only 24fps in their mind.
Or perhaps they want to be truly antiquated and produce a seperate PAL body.
Never mind that both the C300 and the C500 (also destined for the cinema) have 25p, or that on the C500 this is at 4K as well.

Insane.

I hope they are taken to the cleaners on this one, because one thing is for sure, Europe won't bite on this one if it is true.

According to the link, the camera will shoot 1080 25p. 24p appears to be a restriction of the 4k mode?
I'm pretty surprised at where Canon are going with this camera, considering all the options out there at the moment. I can't help think they've just rushing to get something out with 4k tag on it.

Not to mention India. Just in case Hollywood wasn't noticing, "Bollywood" is much bigger.

AFAIK this is DOA in most of the world.

True, 24 fps is the standard in film theatre projection, but in digital theatre projection the DCI specs include 25 fps (for 2K and 4K). Plus you have the PAL TV regions as others have mentioned - not cinema, but producers wanting to future proof their product should be able to shoot 4K if they are using a 4K-capable camera, so this is a strange omission since it's probably not a hardware limitation.

You can always go with post conversion, as well, the use of 1/50th in order to avoid flickering in PAL land.

It seems they have assumed that 4K is not meant for broadcast and hence have kept it at 24fps. I think they can later introduce 25fps for PAL country at 4k recording.

I mean that's my thinking, why would you be shooting 4K strictly for broadcast anyway. If you had to, shoot 24P like you would any other film, then convert to PAL just like you would if it was shot on film.

I understand the argument, but it doesn't hold water. Otherwise why would they offer 25p at 4K on their ultimate cinema camera the C500?
Let's be clear, at $15K I can't think of one potential European client who would not choose a Scarlet at that point. Further, this is a hybrid DSLR, which shoots photos and video, and the profile of a potential buyer is going to be one who would need it for MORE varied uses rather than less.

Blah!
