No more firewire

The new ones only have 1 FW 800 port. If you want 400 you're SOL...I think it's dumb of Jobs to upset the evangelical base of his market, the graphic and media professionals. Without them I think Apple's market share would be considerably less.

You just use a FW800 to FW400 cable. FW400 can be read on a FW800 port with the right cable.

As previously stated in another Apple article on there new updates, THIS IS THE DUMBEST THING THEY'VE DONE IN YEARS.

LAME.

btw, adapters for FW800 to 400 are all well and good but what about people who use high speed external backups drives for FW800? My point is you can't dump footage to your external anymore, your forced to unplug that (and close your project file), open another, capture footage or dump, then unplug cam, and plug in external, and copy your files over. Get real.

You can always buy an express card adapter that allows you to have a FW400 connection too, Kyle. Obviously that's not ideal, as it involves extra cost, but you can retain your current workflow if you are willing to use this workaround.

I also wonder how it would work to daisy chain your camera to a drive, and then to the computer. That could work too, right?

Bottom line is that you can still do everything that you could do with the old model, but it won't look quite the same and it may cost a little more for adapters and cables.

But then again remember when Mac first stopped having floppy drives and people freaked. That machine was the iMac - the machine that saved Apple.

Yes, but in retrospect, they got lucky. They justified it by saying that people could transport documents by e-mail or the Internet; what really made floppies obsolete was cheap CD, DVD, and ESEPCIALLY flash drive technology, most of which didn't exist at the time.

Unbelievable. It looks like a new PC with Sony Vegas is on my horizon. Seems to me Apple is really on the verge of alienating a large part of their hardcore user base.

I think everyone is freaking out over nothing. If you really have that much firewire hardware, get a little hub. And I'm not sure why everyone is pointing the finger at Apple. The market has been driving this for a long time. Most camcorders don't have Firewire on them anymore, and with HD taking over...most people are using some form of media card to capture video to anyway. Apple is for sure still way better than any PC I have or have used. They will keep my business.

There is much more to their idiocy as of late...not just FW.

I can keep my current workflow by buying extra things, but then you also have the displays problem being all glossy. That you can't fix with some fancy shmancy $100 workaround.

I agree with the shinny display thing, but it seems all manufatures are doing that now. I think they forgot that monitor glare is one of the main reasons people left CRT's for LCD in the first place.

I just told a friend of mine about the new laptops (they hadn't heard about the changes)...this is a casual user interested in finally buying a big MBP.

1st response...."no FW400?"
2nd response...."...what the crap?"
3rd response...."I'm not buying one then."

The customer has spoken.

Well, "a" customer has spoken. And a few more in the last few pages I guess.

If he doesn't go with the MB, I guess his options are to go by a Windows laptop, change NLE, and use a crappier OS. I would rather use the MB and change my workflow than go back to an XP or Vista OS.

I guess I just don't get the outrage. Seems to me that people are just making a snap judgement of "upset-ness". If it's really that important, get a MBP and a hub. I have a hard time seeing this completely breaking anyones workflow.
