No more firewire

Dumb decision. I don't think you can monitor a signal from an NLE to a camera (and monitor), via USB, but I could be wrong.

Interesting article. So any speculation about the continuing life of FW on the PC?

A desktop PC can easily be modified to take FW400 and FW800. And a PC laptop can use a PCMCIA card slot to add FW capability as well. I wonder if these options will extend the life of FW on PCs? I think it will...

I never understood the market preference for USB over FW. Then again, I know that Beta was a superior format to VHS....

I guess thats it with my 20 years of apple then....if its true. at least there are some people running OSX on dells and what nots....

wow, I was looking for some Firewire cables at Altex earlier this year, and the sales guy said that they didn't have a lot of stock because f/w was on the way out.

... and I thought he was crazy!

This was such a lame move on the part of apple. So many musicians like the macbook both for production and live performance because of its smaller size. Firewire made it a useful tool in so many ways. Why would they cut the balls off of one of their best products.

My new saying when people suggest something really idiotic... " Thats Dumber than a macbook without a firewire port!"

I'm happy to be a non-Apple user right now.

PCs are doing it too. Sorry. One of my friends was complaining about the new PCs not having firewire. But then again remember when Mac first stopped having floppy drives and people freaked. That machine was the iMac - the machine that saved Apple. A lot of us believe 90% of Americans are filmmakers/artist. It's just not so. It's really a special class of people. And everything is going tapeless now. I don't see the big deal really. And like I said, Apple never wanted us using those Macbooks for this kind of work anyway. We got away with it but it wasn't their intention. Some form of card reader will probably be the new thing. Everyone else will simply use their old computers to upload their Youtube vids.

MBP still have them.

The new ones only have 1 FW 800 port. If you want 400 you're SOL...I think it's dumb of Jobs to upset the evangelical base of his market, the graphic and media professionals. Without them I think Apple's market share would be considerably less.

You're not SOL. You can use a simple FW 800 to FW400 conversion cable. It looks like a normal FW cable, not special box or anything like that. Personally whether it's FW800 or FW400 it doesn't matter to me (although I prefer 800) as long as the keep FW.

But what if you want to capture to your FW 800 drive?...I prefer my old MacBook Pro which has a FW400 and 800 port, as well as 2 USB 2.0 ports.

Just because a new computer comes out doesn't mean you have to buy it. Keep the old model if it's better. I still use a G4 1gig. It simply get's the job done. I'll probably get something else next year but for now this does it.
