No More Bs - Here Is What You Need!!!

i just noticed that it has been 3 yurrs since the original post of the mattinstl sound kit, does it stand pretty much unchanged, i know things don't change as rapidly as with video cameras right now but it has been a little while.

bump for above?

Although I think the bar is being set to high here, as for what acceptable quality is. Most people here want to do a feature film on a micro budget, and it is not true that this is only possible with a "heavy weight" sound kit. Look at all the old movies, many with truly bad sound, it doesn't really make them worse films, look at so many new films with perfect sound which suck ass.
Plus yore list didn't contain everything from a boom pole to field mixer, that would have helped allot. "WHAT DOES THE SOUND MAN HAWE IN HIS BAG" kind of list is what im talking about.

Are you kidding? Many indi (DVX100 range indi) filmmakers set the sound bar so low folks have to dig it out of the ground in post.

Old movies rarely had "truly bad sound". They didn't have big whiz bang FX but that is a post thing anyway.

If your a one man band then it doesn't make much difference. If you have a DP then you should have a sound person, and again it doesn't make much difference. Your asking a question that is very close to one that had a lot of back and forth but no real answers because as I said on that one you are essentially asking "what are the best pants for walking?". With out knowing specifics there is no right answer. There is no one kit that will work for every film situation. Or actually there is an answer and the answer is to have a sound person because THAT is the weakest link. Indi sound doesn't "SUCK ASS" because filmmakers don't have the right gear. It sucks ass because filmmakers don't have anyone around who knows what they are doing (sound wise). And it sucks the worst when they try to "do it all". The rarely pay any attention to sound at all till some friend sees a screening and complains, or they start editing and can't understand what the actors are saying. Look up some threads with names like "how do I fix this sound" or "why does my sound suck" etc. The one thing that is common to almost all of them is that they didn't have anyone who knew what they were doing, and they either didn't know or shrugged it off in production. Now they want some magic bullet that will extract pristine dialog from a wash of noise, static and digital distortion. In 99.9% of the cases having a sound person who had a clue would have solved the problem in production. AND the explanation is almost always the same "after spending all my money to buy a camera and lights and tripods and that cool directors chair I didn't have anything left for sound".

So I guess the point of the rant is that I think you have a fatally flawed request because it assumes that with X gear production sound will be much better. The good news is that the solution is cheaper than buying gear, the bad news is filmmakers actually have to spend some effort to get good production sound.
