No image in DV Rack - HVX not in device manager

Hi there,

I downloaded the DV Rack trial to check it out, and there's no information in the monitors. The faq said the HVX should show up in Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager if it was connected properly, and it's not in there. However, if I go to view -> devices by connection and navagate to my IEEE1394 controller, it shows a "Panasonic DV Tape Recorder/Player".

I've installed all the software from http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=93120&catGroupId=14569&surfModel=AG-HVX200&displayTab=R and windows pops up and asks me if I want to capture video when I turn the camera on. When I first plugged it in Windows seemed to install it proplery (judging from the little balloon by the system tray).

It's connected by a 4 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable into my Compal HEL80 laptop (core 2 duo, 1gb ram, XP Pro SP2).

P2 cards show up fine. P2 viewer works fine.

I would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

You don't need the P2 drivers to use the camera with DV Rack. The drivers are only needed to offload P2 cards through a PCMCIA/PCCard slot or through a USB connection between the camera and your computer.

In order for you to capture live video from the camera, the camera must NOT be set to a native (PN) recording mode, because it doesn't send any data out through the DV port in these modes. The camera will be detected by your computer, but the DV port will be mute.

Next, the use of DVCProHD requires the latest version of the Microsoft IEEE1394 driver, and this is not always installed when upgrading a pre-Service Pack 2 version of XP. In particular, if you go to the Windows Update site and do a web update, it is not installed. In order to get that driver, you need to download the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package, which includes all updated files.

Last but not least, DV Rack requires a working Hardware Video Overlay. If you don't have a recent WHQL-certified video driver, update it. Also make sure that the overlay isn't being directed to a dual-head device or TV-Out port.

Hi THoff, could you tell me how do I verify if Overlay is set properly?

Thanks.

That depends on the video card / integrated video controller you have. You should be able to adjust the Hardware Video Overlay settings in Control Panel -> Display -> Advanced -- once you get there, the dialog will be specific to the video driver.

I installed that package and rebooted, still nothing. The camera is still not showing up under Sound, video and game controllers, it it does show up under "Imaging Devices" as a Panasonic DV Recorder/player.

I don't know how to check that the overlay is working... I can adjust the colour and zoom in with it in my display properties and nothing is grayed out. Is there a more comprehensive way to check that the overlay is indeed working? I'm obviously running the latest drivers from nVidia (geforce 7600 go).

I'm not sure that the camera would show up under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" in Control Panel. I'm not saying it doesn't, but it would surprise me, and I can't check right now.

With the camera connected using Firewire, and in a non-native recording mode, try going into the Field Monitor in DV Rack, right-click your mouse, and see if the Device menu lets you select the HVX.

I'm also assuming you are doing this with the full DV Rack 2.0 HD and not a trial version. The trial version does not support DVCProHD or HDV -- it says so on the download page for the trial.

If you are using the Trial version it doesn't not support HD. Switch the HVX into SD mode and it should work.
