No focus assist with an external monitor??

Hi,

I read through Barry Green's post about focusing... very very helpful.. thanks a bunch!

...using the focus assist is very helpful when using the on camera lcd. But I noticed that the focus assist doesn't work when hooked up to an external monitor. Not that I necessarily need it with an external monitor, but it is just something that I noticed. Is this correct or am I missing something.

thanks-

You are correct, focus assist works only on the on-camera LCD or VF. If you're using an external monitor, it's probably a reasonable assumption that the monitor is higher-res than the on-camera LCD, so no provision for "focus assist" on the external output is provided.

Thanks Barry! Even though it isn't available, I still think it would be a little helpful for the fact of saving some time from zooming all the way in to get a focus and zooming back.

But you should be doing that anyway -- in order to know you're in focus you need to narrow the depth of field down as much as possible, and you do that by zooming in (and preferably opening the iris)... If you're on manual zoom it only takes a few seconds but it's vital for getting sharp focus.

ahhhh... okay I totally understand the focus assist now... it more of a magnification than a zoom. That would make sense then.

...well it's good to know that I've been doing that already (zoom + open iris = sharp focus)

THANKS AGAIN for sharing your knowledge!

Yeah, it's not a zoom, what it does is give you a sort-of-pixel-for-pixel display of what's in the center of the box. It's not exactly pixel-for-pixel, but thinking about it that way helps you understand the feature more.
