No Exit Feature Screen Grabs HVX/M2

Just finished shooting another feature with the HVX/m2 combo this time we used the M2 90% of the time...

It was a thriller, we shot in New Orleans, had a 5 ton grip truck with a 600amp genie.

you can read more info on the movie at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0937233/

we had a great cast with Blanchard Ryan from "Open Water", and Edoardo Ballerini who's been in many tv shows and "Romeo must die"... I can't say enough what pleasure it is to work with professional talent.

I have to get permission to show frame grabs so I'll be showing more over the next few weeks...

I was very happy with the set up this time I used every thing from a 8mm f/3.5 prime to a 70-300mm zoom with a 2x doubler...

I believe we are first in using the Lens babie 3G for a feature production. We used it for almost half the movie. It was a challenge because it's not designed for motion picture work, but it was well worth it.

I'm cutting a teaser for my reel that I'll post when I can...

Is this feature going the festivals route or it already has a distribution deal? Framegrabs look good by the way.

the grabs look fantastic. But you basitds! I have a long list of things I want to do, and on it is making a film based on No Exit...argh.

Hey Vincent,

The grabs look really great. I enjoyed your blog also, I want more!

I got a Garmin for XMAS also, it helps so much. I used to have a huge binder with printed mapquest directions.

For your AC what kind of follow focus are you using? I have the redrock but it doesn't work that well. I wish we could rent an Arri but the budget doesn't usually allow for it.

The stained glass window shot looks really great. Did you have a hazer/fog?

My GF has a lens baby but its Canon :-( The new ones have things to hold it in place like a large format camera right? Your AC must have loved that.

Can't wait to see the teaser reel.

Cheers,

Matt

PS: How did that rap video with the JimmyJib come out?

That is cool you AC'd on Saving Face, I like that film.

we used the LensBabie 3G on static, pan, dolly and even HAND Held! I've been using the 2.0 on concerts and music videos since July of last year.

I used it on The AFI Concert thats on DVD in best buy right now...

http://www.amazon.com/I-Heard-Voice...pd_bbs_sr_1/102-3906266-9491366?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

you relly see it at the begging section of , Endlessly, She Said

It was 24 camera, It was great because all of them wanted to know what the hell was at the end of my lens...

only on some static shots where you "locked" in the Lens I could see doing in post...

It is aculy tilting the lens so you get the "schaganFlugan" Effect (Please medium format people help me out how do you spell it...)

Theres no Distribution deal as of know that I know of...There last movie "feral" did go to a few small festivals before getting a deal...

I'm sure there will be many versions of the No Exit story to tell...

we did use the Red Rock Follow Focus, I've talked about its weaknesses. On this film I had the Marshall on board monitor so my Ac would usually go of that or put marks on the Barrel of the lens not on the Follow focus...

I'll talk more about the lack of follow focus on the lensbabie latter...

and as I said in the blog he loved the Red rock micro Whips...

yes I have my own $1200 hazer, it worked really well we used Haze in almost all the Flash back screens. and makes for great production stills.(which is what its all about! J.K.)

ah yes the Music video, due to Political resons, I can't show because they cut it, then they Re-recorded the tracks so the lyrics don't match so they have to re cut the music video...plus they don't want us to release the Music video on-line with the old music..I'll have some of the footage up as part of a new music video reel eventually...

any notes on ways to improve the production blog as I'm putting them out would be of great help...

I'll try to get another still out today

Thanks Again

VP

Nice bokeh ... lenses?
Also nice haze work. The grabs look great.

I always compare all m2 work against this example:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j118/bonfanti/Rooftop0214.jpg

its a music video shot with a jvc, m2 and Ziess superspeeds. The bokeh (out of focus) has that pro feel to it, with the light turning into nice gelled clumps, not the gaussian smudge we normally see.
This for me is the gold standard of how m2 work should look.
Somehow the G35 stuff that macgregor shoots with an old nikon always has this look as well...

I think the picture you posted is a behind the scene photo taken with an SLR. I might be mistaken though.

Yeah MacGregor's stuff looks great too. Him and VP are pro.

Cheers,

Matt

beautiful work man,

But how are you guys Racking on a Lens baby? Your AC must be a genuis.

Get to know my lenses... and Lensbabie 3g in Action

Get to know my lenses... and Lensbabie 3g in Action

heres a grab from a dolly on the 3g with the wide angle adapter = about 30mm

heres some other info about the lenses we used...

Nikon lenses

8mm f/3.5 peleng

Fish eye 180 degrees...vingetes on the sides but crazy cool

14mm f/2.8 Sigma

I love/ hate this lens because it is auto focus only and theres no clutch on the lens it just keeps spinning

28mm f/2.8 NIkon AF

wish I would have gotten a 2.0 manual instead, but very sharp.

35mm f/2.8

Have not found a 35mm lens that I can get edge to edge sharpness... I own 3!

50mm f/1.4 NIkor

usually the work horse in this film hardly used...sometimes for our wide!

60mm f/2.8 Macro NIkor

I love using this instead of the 50mm when I need the close Focus...this is the lens where we started on a Lighter flame full frame and dollied to a 2 shot!

85mm f/1.8 NIkor

Great lens, used lots on this shoot, often used with the Doubler 2x for a 170mm with the depth of field of a 1.8 but needing the lite of a 3.5!

90mm Macro f/2.5

used lots for CU... even through on the Macro +10 adapter on top of this to shoot Extreme CU...like a name on a cell phone filling frame... or 10 scan lines on a TV!

70-300mm Zoom f/4-5.6

used on the 2 day Ext scenes. used with the x2 for 600mm B-roll shots of the city... a really Slow zoom, I do need to invest in a faster one...

Lensbabies 3G with the wide .6 and telephoto 1.6 adapters

a great selective focus lens. this ones great Because you can "lock" the sweet spot and still rack it almost like a regular lens...

Bennent That still has Really good Reds that I've never seen from the HDV 4:0:1 JVC-100u... and it has the look of a high mega Pixel camera may be the Jvc with Superspeeds is that Tack sharp at 1080...love to see footage from this music video wheres the link?

hah ! my AC hates me. lol. But she'll get over it. I shoot at liek F2.8, over sistances of 2 feet, (which is like 1 inch of DOF) for closeups. She worked her ass off.
