No DVC 80 PAL?

I borrowed a DVX 100A here in germany (PAL) and did some tests with it. The picture is great and all buttons are where they are supposed to be, just like on a digibeta. But... its a lot of money. I know I know, the PD 170 isnt cheaper, but... still a lot of money.

Then i found the DVC-80 on the internet, which seems to be the perfect camera for me, no 25p, but still the same lens and big 1/3 inch chips, cool! And for a streetprice of 2200 USD. I wanted to buy it asap, BUT... My Pana-Dealer said they asked Panasonic about the camera, and they "took it out of production". What?

Now has anybody out there the truth about this camera? Is it a Ghost, is there only a NTSC version, and if so, WHY?

Thanx, Marcel

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

hmmm, i that's lame if it's true. that camera i could see having a pretty decent market, i know there is a the "30"... maybe they want to take out the middle man to force more people into going for the 100... i dunno.

i'm making all of this up, i really don't know why they'd have done this, if it's true.

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

You can get the DVC80 for only $1968 at Profeel, a very reputable dealer (I've purchased from them and they get good reviews from the review sites online).

Try this link: www.profeel.com

More specificially: http://www.profeel.com/agdvc80.htm

Also, it seems that the DVC80 differs from the upcoming DVC30 much like the Sony VX2100 differs from the Sony TRV950.

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

Yeah, but my problem is: I live in europe and need a PAL version of the DVC80.

The DVC30 seems to have 1/4 inch chips, so it will not have the exellent picture of the DVX100. Thats why i am looking for a DVC80 PAL.

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

If panasonic made the dvc 80 pal. There would be almost no need for the dvx1oo pal. just no 50i. just 25p. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of the dvx100 pal version, right?

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

Most definitely not. 25P is the major selling point of the PAL DVX. The DVC doesn't have that.

Keep in mind, PAL is NOT 25 frames per second, it's 50 fields per second. The DVX is 25 progressive frames per second, in addition to 50 fields per second. The DVC80 would shoot 50 fields, but not 25 frames.

I know it can be confusing, but think of it like this: four quarters make a dollar, but four quarters are not a "dollar": they're four shiny metal discs, whereas the dollar is a piece of green paper. May have the same purchasing power, but they're not remotely the same thing... one is multiple metal discs, one is a piece of paper.

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

That's, umm, red (blue?) pieces of paper for you guys in the Great White North . . . ;D ;D ;D

Or gold coins, as I recall. All I know is that an 8 oz can of Coke cost 2 bucks in the machine . . .

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

I think a good example for illustrative purposes is the difference we can see in the NTSC DVX between 30p and 60i. The setting of 60i, of course, is 30 interlaced frames, and 30p is also recorded in 60i, but there's a *marked* difference between how they look. 30p looks much closer to 24p than it does to 60i, even though it has the same number of frames as 60i. It's the progressive scan which makes all the difference, something which I'm just beginning to understand the reasoning behind (it's a complicated calculus combining physics, physiology, and psychology -- it's as much how our brains work as it is how the camera works).

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

At Videoforum UK last week, Pana said on their stand that no DVC80 PAL was going to be released, and that the NTSC version was being pulled in the States (cos it was harming the DVX100 sales).
They showed the DVC30 (PAL), which is a nice cam, aimed squarely at challenging the Sony PDX10. Seemed better than the Sony at first glance (like it has a handle!), but does have 1/4 not 1/3 chips. Plenty of specs avalible if you do a search on google. Due for release in UK in March.

All I know is that people are always trying to slip me the Canadian quarter!

the Sony PDX10 has 1/5 chips.. even worse. I played with the 30 at dvexpo a little, and it seemed like a great little camera.

I always thought the 80 was a wierd addition to the product line, but am a little surprised that they are thinking of killing it.

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

and there is no such thing as a dollar bill up here.. just gold coins that are worth $1.00. We also have a coin thats worth $2.00. Believe it or not we used to have a $1.00 and a $2.00 bill, which was totally retarted.

Re: No DVC 80 PAL?

I had a couple of paper Canadian $1s and $2s when I was a kid -- I grew up on the Great Lakes, so Canadian currency was common -- and the coins traded just like US coins until they made all the machines stop accepting them. But still now, most stores around where I grew up won't even look at the coins twice. You got a Canadian quarter? You're golden.
