no command: Merge clips>replace footage

Good day to you, it appears that when you have merged clips you cannot subsequetly replace footage, this is ridiculous.

Desired workflow:

1. sync dual system audio with footage > merge clips > create synced/merged bin

2. Edit using these merged clips (native h264 files from camera) and going into audition to tweak the superior synced sound.

3. Finish edit then replace footage (h264 files) with up upconverted transcoded files

4. Import premiere project into after effects to grade / effect / conform / output

As I am unable to replace footage due to the merged clips limitation can any of you bright sparks recommend an alternative workflow? I would prefer not to transcode all footage first but perhaps this is the only option.

Surely this is a rudimentary requirement, being able to replace footage of synced clips? a shocking oversite or just bad bin mangement options?

thanks, i eagerly await a response.

You were editing native files so what does this mean?

3. Finish edit then replace footage (h264 files) with up upconverted transcoded files

ie. upconverted to what and why?

Hello Shooter, thanks for your reply (just got back from NZ Whanganui river, beautiful man).

I would like to colour / grade the project using the cineform codec. I use a version of this method to upconvert the footage https://vimeo.com/19908622.

I find that the h264 is not the best for this grading job.

Thanks :)

Why replace...why not Overlay?

Can you conform back via an edl?

Why not do your audio later in the workflow?

Glad you enjoyed your trip. I fish that river and it is beautiful.

Thanks shooter, you've now got me thinking. Overlay: Is 'overlay' a command? Or take a transcoded file top and tail it to in / out point of original and place it in the premiere timeline on the appropriate track at the appropriate sync point?

Director wants to use the tascam 24 bit audio so as to dip in an out of audition as progresses.

I was wondering about using an edl to take into AE and then relinking to cineform files, but not sure if would lose the "merged" audio this way.

I guess I should experiment, but not at the suite at present.

(If i learned one thing in NZ it's never underestimate a river, especially that one)

Only Merge with the clips you intend to use for export. If you want to convert, do that first, and then Merge with those.
