No Budget Rap Video

Hey guys here is a music vid I did for a local up and coming rap group "STR8 BALLAZ"
in Glebe Sydney. Shot in half a day and edited in a couple of hours. Would have liked to
have more time on it but work wouldn't permit it. Done for free for the kids.
Used the 24-105, shoulder rig and a reflector in some shots. Playback done out of a car!
As a cd player hadn't been organised for the shoot! I said it was no budget.

For a rap video, I would have done some more special effects, really degrade it in editing along with slowing it down and set up some drastic transitions but that's just me. I know it was just a free project but those are ones that I would take more chances on since they can't get their money back :)

I thought it looked pretty damn good for a low budget video, and frankly I liked the slightly clean look.

Thanks Kellar, yeah I decided I wanted to keep it pretty clean. One for speed and two I actually liked it clean. And it wasn't low budget, it was no budget! And thanks for your feedback enginyr I am sure the producer would have liked to go that way just no time!

Like everyone is saying, the clean look is cool. I like the ambient lighting.

Notes on the shots:

Group the people closer together and tighten the shot, I'll make it look like there is more of them, giving the shot a fuller look. In contrast, when you want to go wide, make sure the background is interesting, and tells it's own story.

I would use medium shots for the chorus, with lots of people in the frame grouped close together.

You need more energy from the people in the shots. Have them really feel the music, pump them up, get them to express their energy. I think the song has good energy, but the people don't perfectly match that level of energy. It helps to play the music really loudly during filming. Neighbors might think it's a bit obnoxious, but you have to do it in order to get the most energy from your subjects.

Oh, and where are the women? ;)

Not bad.

Some of this was mentioned before but slow motion is a must for all rap videos. And maybe desaturate colors and increase contrast to give it an edgier look?

Keep it up!

Hey guys thanks for watching and all the comments, a lot of these are really good feedback, however like I said we didn't have time on this job the edit was down in a couple of hours! Anyway had we had the luxury of more time, more things would have been done. I would have loved more time than half a day to get more footage too!
