No Audio When Playing Back 4K2HD?

Hi All!
Not sure if this has already been addressed or a known issue..? (Got really busy, so have fallen off the daily (hourly) checking these threads)

When playing back the 4K2HD files on the 7Q alone, there is no audio coming out the headphone jack... (in the correct mode, not in raw or anything different) Yet, if I hook it back up to the turned on FS700, and restart the 7Q, the audio plays back perfectly. Unplug the SDI cable, and loose audio again. Weird!
Mitch, any idea if this is an easy fix? It seems to be a software/firmware issue, able to squeeze it in for the next update? :D

In the meantime -- anyone know how to get audio on play back when you don't want to be tethered to the camera?

Thanks, cheers!
Dan

PS: shot at 1/48, f/1.4, 6400ISO, Slog2 tonight for a live Jazz show (pretty much candle lit), and the image is simply amazing. Yes a bit of grain/noise, but it is so natural looking, not the annoying digital/compression I am used to. Thanks for the great image CD!

Yup, already done that... Can't get any output at any dB settings for playback (when not connected to the camera). But that is correct and works normal when connected to my fs700.

Anyone able to test this on your 7Q? Maybe it is just my unit?

Sorry missed that. It's the unconnected from camera which i seem to remember was an issue. I'll check when I fully wake up!

Can someone else with a FS700 and 7Q please test this out for me?
Mitch, any notes of this happening in testing? Any work-arounds?

I have tried re-flashing the firmware, and it didn't help... Please help! Have a shoot tomorrow and need this function!

Hi,

I had this problem as well. Right now I don't have my O7Q as it was sent to Convergent Design. I had A LOT of other problems as well.

Sami

Thanks for confirming it isn't just me or my unit!

It seems like when you disconnect the camera, the 7Q seems to flash and switch modes? Wonder if there is any way to 'lock' it into sensing the camera connection?

is there a reason why you unconnected the cable from the camera? I usually just leave it connected until I break down the setup at day's end.

Well it does strike me as odd that you can't play back audio independent of the camera. Thinking about it, I've left the camera in situ, ready to resume the same set up after lunch and un- hooked my lightweight monitor/ recorder, picked up some cans, so that I can use it as a player and then attempted to review some takes and specifically check for audio issues over lunch, only to find there was no audio (which slightly freaked me out). After speaking to Dan I assumed it was the default audio level setting. Mitch - maybe you can tell us if this is a quirk of the machine, a setting or something that can/ will be addressed etc. Cheers.

Roy @ Convergent Design was on this issue today, and managed to find a bit of a workaround while they sort out how to fix the issue:

"Thanks for the info.
What I have found so far, the FS700 RAW and 4K -> HD operate the same on the playback audio.

The developer has been informed of the issue and what info I have found.

If you disconnect the SDI-A input while monitoring in either REC or PLAY mode the audio is turned off.
If you have no SDI-A RAW signal available at power on then audio has not yet been enabled in play mode.

I have managed to find a few work arounds:

Disconnect the SDI-A cable while playing the clip.
This leaves the audio enabled and you can play any of the ProRes clips in the play list. This works for FS700 RAW playback also with SDI-A no longer attached. Note: The audio only stays enabled until the REC button is enabled (turns red) in REC mode.

If the recording was 4K -> HD, and you have no 4K RAW input available you can switch the SETUP MONITOR -> RECORD mode to be 4:2:2 -> PRORES HD and play any of the .mov clips with audio with no SDI-A attached.

Hope this helps until we get this fixed.
- Roy"

I just found this issue on location and it too freaked me out! Has this not been fixed in the latest firmware? In fact I can't get the O7Q to play audio no matter what I do and if camera is connected or not.

I have the same problem. What I found out is that you can play back the last clip from the 7Q and hear the audio. You can't hear the audio from the next to last or other clips though.

I had another weird and worrying problem at the same time I noticed the lack of audio. Probably unrelated but recording switched over to SSD2 when the first drive filled up. I then stopped recording and played back a clip from ssd2. The screen went black and no control of the O7Q was possible so had to pull the power. That then resulted in having to rebuild the drive. Not a great experience and left me rather worried. Still not been able to confirm audio has been recorded. Luckily I always record backup on the FS700 too. It's probably ok, at least I hope so.

Im left again with the feeling that this firmware simply hasn't been tested enough, maybe in the rush to get it out.

The other thing I see is a problem with zooming while recording. Each time I zoom in and then out again while recording, the image gets wrapped vertically and the top few lines of pixels get shown at the bottom i.e. The image is offset vertically and wraps around to the bottom. The more times I zoom, the more the offset becomes. This is VERY annoying and if only using the 7Q, makes accurately composing the shot quite difficult :(

If you read the Release Notes for the latest firmware there are some suggested fixes for when this occurs. The general suggestion is to go out of playback mode and then return to it to see if audio is then restored.

Thanks will check. On location so tricky at times. I did try going in and out as my first step but that didn't work.

How about the vertical video issue?

I've just looked at the release notes but can't see anything that you were referring to?

BTW, have you ever looked at your web site on an iPhone? Could do with some improving for mobile ;)
