No 72024PN at DVCPRO100?

The manual states that, "The 720P/30PN and 720P/24PN formats are not included in the DVCPRO HD recording format"

This is my first time fiddling with this camera, but can I get it it to record true DVCRPRO100 at 720PN?

That probably just means that because the Native modes are not recorded at 60 fps, they're not true to the DVCPRO HD recording spec.

They're frame-for-frame identical; they just don't have duplicate frames in the recorded stream as, say, the Varicam would, or the P modes do, when shooting 24 or 30 fps (or any of the variable frame rates). Only the frames shot are recorded; there's no need to insert any kind of pulldown or other frame duplication to conform to 60 fps recording.

It's probably included in the manual in case someone was expecting a 60 fps stream when they got into post.

But it's "true" DVCPRO HD in every respect except for the absolute number of frames recorded.

I just want to make sure that I'm actually laying down the 100 spec -- not 50, as it appears to be locked into at the moment.

If you select 720 or 1080 mode, you are getting DVCPRO-100. You cannot shoot DVCPRO50 in any mode other than standard-def. All 720 and 1080 is DV100.

The DVCProHd format is a tape based format or an "over 60" format which means that the framing is placed over 60fps (actually 59.94) to conform to tape... When you record 720p the duplicate frames are added and then a pulldown is done so that the video is now at 24fps...(23.98) In 24PN only the native frames are recorded, no duplicate frames, therefore no pulldown necessary. Im assuming you are using the HVX. Since the HVX records to P2 cards not tape, it doesnt need to conform to the 60fps tape format. But the data rate and frame rate are independent of each other.

In film mode , 720/1080 the camera data rates are dvcproHd. This is 100mgbit data rate.
720, 24P is an over 60 format. Wasteful and doesnt take advantage of the P2 system. Records duplicate frames that need to be removed upon ingest, to conform to a 24fps timeline.
If you are going to tape (60fps), great, give you the look of near film on tape.
720, 24PN records only the native frame, no pulldown, and saves space on the P2 cards. Variable frame rates can only be used in this mode, but no audio is recorded in any other frame rate than normal.

It's not locked into DVCPro50. Any menu setting that is not applicable in your current recording configuration is shown in blue, and will reflect the last setting you used when you did have access to that setting. It is entirely possible to shoot 1080p and have a blued-out recording format of DV shown in the menu.

Thanks for the clarification. It was just that bit in the manual -- at the top of the post -- that had me concerned that the camera was recording at a lower data rate than 100mps. (Again, 720 24PN)

Well, technically, it is -- 40 Mbps at 24pN -- but that's only because it's recording 40% of the frames it would if were recording 60 fps. As I said above, it's frame-for-frame identical, just without the duplicate frames.

This is a GOOD thing -- there are no quality issues, there is no need to remove duplicate frames in post, and it takes up 2.5 times less space on the card.
