No 24PN support?!

How come Avid does not support 24PN mode on the HVX? Are there any workarounds? I plan to shoot my next film on 24PN to save space on the P2 cards but now Avid seems to ruin my plans...

I shoot 720P 24 Native all the time with my P2 cards. The footage works just fine with Avid Xpress Pro HD. Just create a 720P/23.976 project in Avid. You should be able to edit with no problem.

Seriously, is FCP just paying people to spread mis-information about Avid? It seems every other day I see some person claiming that Avid doesn't play nicely with the HVX200 in one way or another. The really annoying thing is that it always seems to be in areas that Avid actually does BETTER than the competition or supported first which really makes it sound like deliberate mis-information is being leaked.

Avid has always supported 24pN. In fact, save for Edius Broadcast, it was the only one to initially support it without extra software needed to unwrap the MXFs or do conversions. Avid has it's own quirks with the HVX200 just like any editing system (you'll need extra software to do frame extractions in 1080p) but the level of Avid-bashing that I'm seeing more and more really is just staggering.

I believe that Raylight and Cineform HD can go ahead and do frame extractions that can then be brought into Avid. I believe also that, if you shoot on an FS-100, it can now do it automatically. The problem with Avid in that regaurd is that it's used to do pulldown and frame extractions only when digitizing. Hence, it was fine for the Varicam and other DVCPro stuff. MXFs however are simply dragged and droped in the media folders and there isn't a command to remove redundant frames so you can edit on a 1080p24p timeline.

24 PN works just fine with Avid when recording to the P2 cards.

24 PN does not work with Avid when recording with the FS-100 in Focus's PN mode.

Here is the email I received today from Focus:

Engineering is looking into the issue. A fix will be in the next version update 3.1. This version will be posted on our web page www.focusinfo.com <http://www.focusinfo.com> .

Thanks,
Joe

So Raylight and Cineform's pretty much the only alternative to cutting 1080i24pA MXF if you aren't on Edius Broadcast?

gotta choose a PC NLE and stick with it soon...

For what it's worth, MichaelP has said that Avid will be implimenting pulldown on the file level (instead of just the capture level) in Xpress Pro. He hasn't been able to say when that will be implimented, but it's something that Avid is aware of and working on.

That would be quite handy. I love it when software can accurately auto detect what it is I need.

It was just misinformation? That's pretty wacked. Something sinister's happening...

I know I kind of sounded like a conspiracy nut but I've just found it odd how much mis-information I keep hearing about the HVX200 and Avid. I'm not a technical expert but I've been working with the two together for almost a year now yet I keep seeing these same kind of threads or off handed comments on message boards. For months I kept hearing that Avid couldn't handle MXFs which is hilarious since MXFs are the foundation of all their HD media management and MXF has been an option in Avid for at least the last two years (probably more).

Good to hear. Any word on if they're going to let users just look in ONE folder on a drive when using the Media Tool? For the most part, importing has been fast and easy but it's kind of annoying that, if I want to dig up a clip, I have to sift through EVERY SINGLE CLIP ON THE DRIVE.

I doubt it, given the way that Avid manages media. The "dump all files to one central folder and use databases for indexing" method is one of Avid's strengths, but I know what you mean about finding a clip. When I use FCP which has the "media management, what's that?" mentality and I'm forced to do everything I can tell you where ANY piece of footage is right off the top of my head. That has come in handy sometimes.

I know media management is one of Avid's biggest strengths. I've seen countless FCP die-hards admit it's the one thing they love about Avid. That said, I just don't see why this is an issue. You're free to create numerous folders in the Avid Media Files directory like numerically starting from one. I, like many, put each new P2 card or group of clips in a new folder. Why in God's name can't I just tell the media tool to only look in fold "5" instead of every damn one?

If you have more than one drive for your media use, you can easily separate your folders out a bit more distinctly by placing different project(s) media on different drives and in unique numbered folders. Then when you launch your media tool you can select only the drive(s) you want to work with.

Still not the same. I've got two drives that I use but I have multiple projects on both. Right now I have a head-ache because I still have some training videos left on one drive. I don't want to get rid of them because over the summer the people would like me to do a spanish dub of the two. However, I've got two new projects I'm working on now and having all that training video footage to sift through is amazingly annoying. I repeat, I can't see any logical reason why I can't just say look in this folder.

Have you tried Avid Xpress Pro HD v5.7? I hear there are a lot of new MXF workflow features.

This may not be a magic bullet but...

Would a FREE tool be of any use to you?

LINK

I find it indispensable. It will find all of your Avid files by project. From there you can have the utility copy, move, archive, delete etc. your Avid files. This would allow you to sort your projects out one from another. Then, you could re-organize your self-numbered Avid .mxf folders into an ordered structure that would work for you. (each project could easily be separated into your assigned numbered .mxf folder)

I use it all the time between Avid systems. I don't know what I would do without it.

Oh... did I mention its free?

I know this isn't exactly what you are asking for, but it will help if you use it with a little imagination.

Sounds great and I'm downloading it as we speak but it sounds like I'll still have the problem of not being able to chose which folder to grab stuff from. Since I do most stuff on P2, my issue isn't organizing folders (save on the rare occasions I shoot tape). I already stick each P2 card into a different folder number and keep a record of what is where. My problem is that, when I start a new project and put the new clips into the Avid Media Files directory in their own folder, when I open the media tool I see every clip on the drive instead of just the ones I added. This means that for every project I end up spend a lot of time sifting through my hundreds of clips. There's got to be a better way and I just haven't heard a logical reason why I can't chose what folder to look in.

Still, thanks for the link. It'll definatly make backing up and transfering easier.

I don't have it but I've heard 5.7 doesn't fix this. I've also been told that Avid has made no mention of fixing it in the future (like they have with other issues like Frame extractions).
