Nnovia DTE for HVX

While at NAB, I learned about the Nnovia HD for HDV, which seems like a better product than the Firestore.

So I found their booth and spoke with the man there, turns out they are working in a HVX compatible model that will record 100gb onto removeable hard drives. Cost will be around 2k for the recorder +1 drive, and $400 for each additional drive (100gb). The drives are shock mounted and weather resistant. The best part is that the drive comes with a firewire/usb2 cable, so it would seem you could record 100gb, then swap the drives, and dump the footage to your computer while recording on the other drive. This makes much more sense than the firestore with the fixed 100gb size.

Finally, I asked to be sure it will capture the full DVCproHD 100mb stream, and he said it would. So I'm crossing my fingers.

BTW
I've been told that the Nnovia HD for HDV is pretty bombproof, one shooter said he's used it on many shoots including motocross riding and ATV jumping, all without a glitch. He also has used the MCE and Firestore models, but likes the Nnovia the most.

I've heard good reports about the nNovia for DV, so this is very welcome news indeed. Any indication of how soon it'll be out?

He said it would be out in 3 months, so we're looking at mid summer?

They had a similar model on display, it has a similar control plate to the dv/HDV model, but a little door that takes small removeable drives. It's certainly larger than the firestore, but otherwise looks like it could be a great solution.

While I welcome ALL new products that increase our storage options, I hope it can record natively.

If anyone is still at NAB and can swing by the Nnovia booth, ask them if this device will record natively with the HVX.

If its record using the firewire i dont think it can do native since Hvx200 dosen't output native in the firewire signal.

Maybe they could implement a fuction or button to take the files and eliminate the extra frames when it´s not recording.

Can it be done or is it just wishful thinking? The same for the Firestore, of course.

I'm hoping they can do exactly that. Other programs can (like Edius and FCP) so hopefully the processing horsepower is included in these devices to allow such capability. Firestores are field-upgradeable so maybe it'll be possible.

David mentioned my discovery at NAB in a post relating to Firestore. In FCP 5.1 when using the Firestore in P2 acquire mode, there is a check box for FCP to remove the extra frames. So, this is effectively "advanced pulldown removal" and will import your clips with pulldown removed and ready to edit in 23.98 timeline. So, this is not an issue any more as far as I am concerned. Interesting about Nnovia. When I asked them about DVCPRO HD support they just said "no." I guess it was just me, or maybe they were intimidated by the press badge and didn't want to say anything that might be perceived as "on the record." Their product look very sturdy.

Nnovia and native 24p

Nnovia and native 24p

I emailed Nnovia to ask the 24p native question, no answer yet.

I also asked Serious about native 24p for their DVC Rack, and they said yes, theirs will do the native 24p, saving precious disk space. I know, it's apples and oranges, but I hope that either firestore or nnovia will figure it out...
