Nikon Z9 with 8k Posted on B&H

Once again, speculating - the sensor will probably be in the 7800x5200 area, around 40 MPX, but specifically designed not to do 8K.
I find it inconceivable that Canon would make their own sensor with 8K’s worth of pixels and a faster readout than any previous Canon sensor but not follow up with the software support for 8K video. Especially when they pushed out the R5 with 8K as the main selling point.

More likely they can’t yet produce a sensor with the small feature size needed to benefit from stacked CMOS (e.g. on-sensor DRAM) at 40-megapixel pixel pitch.

Alternatively, they’re keeping the industry guessing by withholding the information that this camera can indeed do 8K video. It’s curious that they said nothing whatsoever about video in this announcement. Even in SLR announcements they’ve talked up video for years.

It would actually be pretty normal for them if they made an 8K stills camera without 8K video as that's how they operate and those are the kind of things they have always done (very specific products).

With that said, since the camera is in development, they could very well be still working on the video features and haven't decided yet what they will offer (which could also be a good thing).

The R5 debacle appeared to cause them a headache and they might be cautious with this announcement.

Isn't 8k video a tad unstable on the R5? As cool as it is I don't think Canon is really ready yet for 8k video in a DSLR. Heck they can barely handle 4k without some heating issues. IThe 8k sounded really cool until I heard it can record for something like a few minutes and then you have to stick the camera on dry ice for ten days to use it again. Exaggeration of course.

There are videos of people showing the overheating isn't real (like by resetting/removing the camera's internal battery).

The "overheating" affected various 4K modes as well, but there is no doubt in my mind these companies can make much more powerful cameras but they instead milk the technology (which is exactly what corporations should do).

Oh that’s hilarious. Missed the sale by two days. Oh well I paid $339 so only a $70 difference. That would have paid for most of the $79 add on follow focus however. Oh well. That’s the really of this game we play.

If you ordered from B&H, they will at least give you store credit if you get in contact with them. Had the same thing happen to me about 2 months ago with a lens I ordered, it went on B&H's Deal Zone for a rather significant sale while the lens I ordered was still in route to me, lol. I called and they gave me store credit in the amount of the significant sale amount.

An exaggeration? Only a slight one.

The camera does overheat at 8K and the supersampled 4K but the original firmware then wouldn't allow it to work even when a typical cooling period ended. And people used thermometers to clearly see that. That's what drove so many insane.

The first firmware update changed it from being totally under Canon's control to somewhat more reflecting of the actual state of the camera. The company would have been sued until it either fixed the problem or recalled the first batch because these shutdowns weren't brought up either during the official announcements or in the manual. Now, it seems to work relatively well in spurts but definitely not in continuous heavy use in 8K shooting.*

Sony 1A also overheats and also shuts down in 8K (depending on the ambient temperature) but then it has a much quicker recovery time.

*Canon is rumored to release the same R5 but in a bigger body and with an internal cooling fan that should enable fairly long recording times and nary a need for shut downs.

I also just bought a crucial x6 4tb ssd from amazon a day after their sale ended ($140 off, coming down to $350). They gave me a partial refund after I ordered the item at full price. It never hurts to ask. especially in this case since you could theoretically return the weebill and just order it from b&h, not that you're likely to go to the trouble
