I think everyone's looks great. OK, well it's officially Tuesday, so everyone list your top 2 choices (Joe, with 5 choices it just gets too complicated and everything else).

So first place is 2pts and second place is 1pt and then we just add it all up and the winner picks next weeks topic.

The images look great so good luck to everyone!

OK, everyone vote for your first place and second place finishers and then we'll move onto next weeks challenge. Everyone's stuff looks amazing!

1/yank... I like the dreamy look of the shot.
2/ipo... I really like this photo... more emphasis on water would have raised my praise... still, it fits because I can see the water and I kept telling myself "the substance of life".

Other comments:

nash... I like the shot, but I don't find the BG interesting until the sun... with a deeper DOF and the entire falls in focus by short shutter.... OR by long exposure and blurred falls... then burning out the area over the falls... falls, dead space, then the sun... I would have pushed it up. It's still a good picture... I really like it... just giving my C&C for sake of the thread.

blaine... I like this shot on a very personal level... I'm a weirdo... I have this odd fixation on ordinary things. I drink my coffee out of a glass... the same TYPE of glass that I have for 10 years... I've had to buy new glasses several times, but it's always the same ones. Anyway... picking citrus off a tree is much more to me then it should be also... when I was a kid my parents nearly got divorced and I lived with my mom in Florida for 6 or so months... I had a great-uncle down there with a grapefruit orchard... a small one, but to a child it was huge. I can remember climbing the trees to pick a grapefruit, bring it in and sprinkle sugar on it, then eat it... that is seriously one of my very favorite childhood memories. I'd have liked to see the water running off a lemon and dripping with some sun or other feature in the drip... instead the leaves. For me the texture of the lemon is the most interesting facet of that tree.

howdareme... nice shot, but I'm not feeling the PS work on it... I'd have liked to see the label off the bottle... then backlight to sillouette the face while backlighting the water flow. Also the focus is on the label instead of the pour of water.

cast4shows... I love the dog and the water frozen in the air... If you could burn out the green BG this may have been my top pick.

infokill... I really like the shot... no criticisms or special comments... it's a nice shot.

cheez... this is a good classic shot... I was going to do something like this, but I decided to post what I did only because of the odd image that I noticed in it while I was editing.

The reason NOT to vote for me is because I posted an accident... also as I'm viewing this thread I'm thinking of SO many cool water possibilities around town. I'm going to have to step it up next time.

I feel kind of weird about the evolution of this thread... should we be doing this in a new thread or does it matter if we just eventually push this to a couple hundred pages?

JoeNash:
I like the overall composition of the image but it seems too busy to me. I think that the almost stop motion effect on the water is very effective and really captures that singular moment in time, and I really like the sihloette effect of the trees with the sun coming through. I would like a little more in the black and white range versus so much gray to really make the overall image just pop. Great entry and beautiful shot.

Blaine:
The detail in this shot is incredible. You have beautiful bokeh in the background, your image so so sharp I can see the lines or veins of the leaves beneath the water drops, and to me it just feels like morning. I really like this image a lot, but on the lower most leaf that blowout from the sun sort of pulls my attention a little too much. I really like the detail in this shot a lot.
iposiniditos
I really like the color in this image and I love the detail that you can see in the frog. I like how you have the foreground established so it doesn't look like a top down shot or anything and just conveys a nice sense of being there. At the same time I couldn't really see the water element although I know it's there, it isn't really so much the focus of the image. I think it is a great shot though and really shows a lot of talent. I like the lighting and everything and it looks like something right out of National Geographic.
Howdareme
The water flow is beautiful and really just works for me. I wish that the bottle was as stylized as the person or that the person wasn't so stylized though because it doesn't have a continual feel throughout. Part of the image is trippy and part is realistic. I think you are certainly developing a very unique style though.
Cast4Shows
I think that you captured a great shot here with a perfect subject. I love the layout of the water and how you kept this weeks challenge in the forefront of the image. I wont rehash any of the post adjustments of the contrast but for me the blowout on the left and right lower side of the dog makes things appear just out of place. I also wish that the details of the the dog or the water were sharper to really draw your attention to one specific area. This is a great shot though and something that with a little tweaking could really be on a dog calandar (yes, I do own those).

MattinSTL
Well if this isn't 180 degrees different than what you did last week then I don't know what to say. I think that your image best captures the idea behind the challenge and is just amazing. The colors of the fish (I'm guessing they are Coi, or whatever) is just amazing through the distortion of the water. This is an amazing shot and really reminds me of that iceburg analogy... you know, more being beneath the surface. Great shot Matt, I'm amazed.

Infokill
I love this shot and it could be a postcard. The water is a little sloppy as it shoots, but I know that is just because, well, how consistent are fountains to begin with? I think that you use the element to perfectly stage your image and create a nice contradiction of elements (the city and water) and really say something with your image. I wish that the building and background were either sharper or more blurred because right now in that middle ground they don't enhance the image but distract from it. Ultimately though this is an amazing shot. Great job!

cheezweezl
I like the staging of this image and think that you are just one step shy of having this perfected to the point of it being an advertisement in a magazine. The lighting in this shot is perfect for your subject and you capture it perfectly. My only criticism is that I think that if the image wasn't so soft it would be right there at the top. Great job and I can't wait to see your next image.

My Votes:
First Place: MattinSTL
Second Place: Infokill

Great job everyone. I really struggled picking out which order to put everything in because I think that there are so many great images, but overall I am really impressed. Congrats to all!

Nice photos!

Nice photos!

I've been following this thread, even though I bought that "other" camera... and I just had to say... Yankee, that's an awesome photo!

Thank you. I'm happy with the way it came out but really struggled trying to decide which to submit. Ultimately the biggest thing I learned from this challenge was just learning how to use an ND filter to get the effect I had in mind. I'm happy with the final result though, so thank you very much for the compliment. I think overall there are just incredible images in this challenge, many of which I would hang on my wall.

1. InfoKill- My favorite of all the pictures. At first glance it appears to be black + white....just grabbed me attention the most. great job....

2. How Dare Me- The theme was water and you kept that natural....not shopped at all..love it. And the best part is that the water appears to be sharper then anything else in the picture. excellent work

Runners Up For Me-

Well it was tough because I thought all of them were pretty great, and its hard to compare such unique and creative interpretations of the theme "water". Anywho....I liked
- The Frog- bit too dark for me...wish the frog popped a bit more
- The Fish Having Sex- looks like a really cool abstract painting
- The Water Fall + Black Storks....like it alot....almost looked like CGI...very cool
- The b+w waterfall- love the sun peaking through the trees...wish the shot was from a lower point in the falls....shooting through the falls...easier said then done i am sure.

Anyways, Thanks for allowing me to participate...looking forward to the next Comp!
Here is my original un-shopped pic.....thought i would show you what i was working with.

If you mean that you want a picture under your username at your posts, put it in the "Edit Avatar" area and not in the "Edit Profile".

Well while we're waiting for Joe and Cheez to come around and vote so we can move on I figured I would go ahead and post the other images that I debated on entering for this.

1. Heather on the Rocks
This is a model/actress I work with A LOT. This was a 3 second exposure and she said that the water was pretty cold. I just appreciate that she was able to sit so still for three seconds. I didn't enter this because it looked too much like one of those strange Jesus pictures.

2. Black and white from bridge
I debated long and hard about this image, but I really wanted to create something that was surreal and this just reminded me too much of my previous entry. I think that it is an interesting angle and approach and I liked how the entire foreground is the same element as the focal point of the image, but I just wanted to do something different:

3. Heather on the Rocks Staring
This is the shot that was meant to be topless facing the other way. I don't like the processing after looking at it and it still reminds me a bit too much of one of those Jesus pictures, but at the same time it wasn't pushed with the surreal elements that I was seeking. Regardless, this one is still an image that I got a kick out of.

Well, just thought I would share these also.

Thanks to those who commented and gave advice on my photo :)

Yankee: your shots are so dream like wow. Its actually kinda scary to me cuz it has the same color tone my nightmares have lol. Are those birds really there? and what kind of birds are they?

JoeNash: I like the framing in this one. Kinda get the feeling im laying down near the water fall.

Blaine: The colors and detail is great.

Howdareme: I like the comp. I like how the subject looks like thier burning up and NEEDS that drink of water. I would have gone without the label though.

cast4shows: Beautiful dog :) I actually like the original more than the corrected version. Maybe slight adjustment to make the colors pop a little more would have been good, but i think the hight contrast really represents the heat your dog is trying to escape from lol.

MattinStl: Looks like a painting! I ahve a strong background in the fine arts and this looks as if it was done with a brush and some oil paint.

Cheez: Your shot made me thirsty when i saw it lol.

ipo.: I dont know what it is about your shots, but i love the colors and detail in them.

Thanks Info... that shot was taken totally in the dark... with my flash handheld off in my left hand while I shot one handed via the right. I'm into painting also... but I'm not too good at it. I mostly do stuff in the modern tradition of crap. Here's the whole shot... the way the flash caught the soft ripples of the water just caught my eye and I also thought it looked like an impressionistic painting... it wasn't until I moved around in it that Santa popped out at me, now it's all I can see in there:

The more I look at everyone's submission and entry the more amazed I am at how diverse this weeks entries are versus last weeks entries. I think as this continues for several weeks not only is it going to grow in participants, but more importantly, the level of the submissions will continue to grow exponentially.

I'm having a blast and just want to thank everyone for participating and give me motivation to actually shoot with a plan.

-Jeremy

EDIT:

Matt made his post right as I was posting mine so I didn't get to check it out prior to hitting submit. Matt, I just love that image and it really reinforces why the megapixel count isn't a nonissue. The ability to find that perfect image within an already great image opens up a whole new world to digital photography. Maybe that is one of the reasons i'm considering that D80 out of nowhere, but regardless, that is an incredible image and you really found something within it that could stand alone and completely work. Great job.
