Matt you make a great point. I think that the line between digital and film has become completely blurred. Without going into specifics of making video look like film which I think have been well discussed and documented, the actual line in photography between film and digital has become blurred. I don't think the biggest issue is really megapixels or lens quality. I don't think much has to do with the camera you're using. Overall I think that it is a bit of everything. Now film does allow for larger formats, but I am not going to be printing anything that will have to cover an entire wall. For me, the most important issue is can I make these images large enough to blow up to 11x17 and the answer is always yes, and this is out of a 6MP camera.
I have had people ask me what film stock I'm shooting. That is the real compliment, so personally, I see no point in ever investing that sort of money into film. The problem is simply coming back to the cropping, but this most recent challenge has had me doing a lot of cropping and no problems thus far.
I think it is amazing how affordable photography becomes after the initial capital investment and the on again off again lens lust.
Regarding the IR, it was fun but that's just a friend of mine. We were trying to have her sit on the rock facing the other direction topless but Sunday at this place people kept walking by so it just didn't work out.
Plus, it would be real hard to do a candid IR shot because I made Heather sit still for 10 seconds on that shot. Anything candid would almost have to be someone sleeping or something.
Oh well...
