Nikon User Thread

Matt you make a great point. I think that the line between digital and film has become completely blurred. Without going into specifics of making video look like film which I think have been well discussed and documented, the actual line in photography between film and digital has become blurred. I don't think the biggest issue is really megapixels or lens quality. I don't think much has to do with the camera you're using. Overall I think that it is a bit of everything. Now film does allow for larger formats, but I am not going to be printing anything that will have to cover an entire wall. For me, the most important issue is can I make these images large enough to blow up to 11x17 and the answer is always yes, and this is out of a 6MP camera.

I have had people ask me what film stock I'm shooting. That is the real compliment, so personally, I see no point in ever investing that sort of money into film. The problem is simply coming back to the cropping, but this most recent challenge has had me doing a lot of cropping and no problems thus far.

I think it is amazing how affordable photography becomes after the initial capital investment and the on again off again lens lust.

Regarding the IR, it was fun but that's just a friend of mine. We were trying to have her sit on the rock facing the other direction topless but Sunday at this place people kept walking by so it just didn't work out.

Plus, it would be real hard to do a candid IR shot because I made Heather sit still for 10 seconds on that shot. Anything candid would almost have to be someone sleeping or something.

Oh well...

That's so true... digital creates better photographers in SO many ways. One friend of mine who was defending film said that if there was ONE thing he wanted from the digital world that would be the LCD preview of the shot on the roll. Just so he'd know that he basically got what he was going for... I didn't even think of this at the time, but he'd need that AND a 500 picture roll of film... then he'd need to be able to view his shots and decide which one's he wanted. And this is to say nothing of the control that digital gives you towards the final product.

Digital cameras are cheap once they're paid for.

Here's another shot to better define the sense of place on my last couple... I don't think these are good pictures... not at all... so don't patronize me on that... but I do think it's cool that I can show you a place that most people (99.99%)... even within a couple miles of me have never, and will never see.

We just stumbled into the property shouting "Howdy Neighbor!"... but there was no answer... :)

I am brand new here...my friend/producer referred me. One hand on the shutter and one on the fountain.....trashcan in the background to look like a bush....and people kept calling my dog over because they thought she was cute...freakin amateurs distracting my talent! This was my favorite although one eye is slightly blocked.

I like this one, but I would have removed the factory on the right side. I think that would have given much more of a sense of isolation from tech/industry/urban environment, something the rest of the picture really supports.

Great shot. The look on the dog's face is priceless.

The levels/curves look a little pushed though. Not too far, but almost too contrasty.

Ha, I kind of like the factory in the background of the buddha shot. Just a small reminder that even this little buddha escape isn't really an escape from modern life/technology.

This just shows how a single image can say different things to different people. I think that certain things make you feel a certain way or speak to the differences within us all. This image just happens to be a great example of one thing that turns one person off to an image versus something that pulls another person to the image.

Isn't art a wonderful thing?

Thnx alot for the feedback...i am so lucky to have such amazing talent. I have been shooting digslr for just a few months...and my dog, skylar, is the subject of almost all my shoots...she is just stoked to get all that attention!

OK, well here is my entry for the water contest.

I set three objectives for myself with this image:
1. I wanted to shoot a waterfall as smooth and silky as possible to give it a surreal look and convey a sense of motion.
2. I wanted the overall image to be color so as to contrast with my previous entry but also exist in that surreal world.
3. I wanted to create an image that would convey emotion rather than my previous entry which I thought was a little too much of a post card image.

Well, enough said, here is my entry, shot on a D50, 18-70 lens, UV filter, Circular Polarizer, and .9 ND filter.

I expect we'll most likely still see something from Matt & Rapier, though.

It's a great composition.Colors, subject, motion of the water... great! Additionally, the angle of view and the crop is perfect to my eyes. If i have to say something "bad", i would say that maybe flamingos (they are a kind of flamingos, aren't they?) are a little bit dark in some points and they are seem to be one thing with the background.
No big deal, photo is excellent!

...and better than mine :)

Here is mine. Newer park built in the middle of columbus circle. Really nice lookin at night. This is about 3am.

Side note: Matt you'd be proud of me, i managed to exchange that lens and get store credit. Got me an sb-600, polarizer filter and an omni bounce diffuser. And i still have 56 bucks left! thinking of getting another memory card, what do you think i should spend it on lol?

Hey I AM proud of you! You'll love that flash... I never go without it and I use it way more then you'd expect... my picture above is taken after dark... even in daylight I use it a lot. BTW I like your pic... thanks for the backstory... 3am.

pictures look great, so you guys wanna do a point system, everyone lists there top 5 pictures,
1st place - 5 points
2nd palce - 4 points
3rd place - 3 points

etc...

we add up the points and whoever has highest wins!

Does that sound fair? can we all agree on that? i think its probably most fair and intersting and fun way. i'm gunna wait a ltitle bit longer till i make my top 5

(and you can't vote for yourself)
