Nikon User Thread

Nice shot, personally I would crop it if you have the resolution.

The focus is a little soft. Why did you decide to close your aperture so much, your bound to wind up with diffraction and your long exposure might cause a little motion blur with the moon.

I took about a dozen or so, each with slightly different settings, this one just happened to come out the sharpest, can't tell you why.

As far as the focus goes, it seems pretty sharp to me, look at the hard shadows on the craters on the right.

If your original file looks sharp then it could just be that the image needs a little (more) sharpening when you downscaled it for web.

If you didn't already know, when you downres an image, your image editor needs to interpolate which pixels to blend together. This is not a "content aware" (my new favorite adjective btw) algorithm, so you wind up loosing edge sharpeness/definition.

I'll say this only once, getting a tack sharp picture of the moon is a royal b***h. I got a lotta atmosphere to shoot through. Moving on.

Bored today. Took a funny picture (even funnier, right as I took it, an earthquake hit. I don't know who all felt it, but in San Diego it was rather grand) today. I call it,

My hobby has become more of a job, and as such I have returned to an old hobby for my "fun". Thus, haven't posted in a while. Here is a photo that was inspired by the old hobby. Enjoy.

It's nothing spectacular, just one of those photos I've always wanted to take. The image hasn't been cropped or altered any, just resized.

It took a 400mm lens, along with a 2x teleconverter. f32, ISO 100, 1 second long exposure.

i shot this one hand-held with the 70-200VR, at like 1/250 sec, low ISO widest aperture. you really dont need a long exposure, and such a small aperture could be causing the softness in your picture. i sold this one seen below, i love that you can actually see the curvature of the moon and the cratering depth. converted to black and white and cropped and resized. i forget if it was with the d300 or d50 or d3, i just grabbed a body and the lens on a cold october night.

The softness of mine was actually because it was taken as the moon was very low in the sky, just above the horizon really, being diffused heavily by atmosphere. I was taking it as a test to see if I could position a model somewhere between myself and the moon to get their silouette. That test didn't go so well first time around so I just posted the lone moon shot.

gotcha; i was wondering why it was so stained with color.

Is there anyway to post from Flickr? I cant get it to work and I am using photobucket which sucks.

Shot a friend's baby and convinced them to help me out with this shot just for fun.

Thoughts on the compositing work? Curious as to how "correct" it looks disregarding the fact that its obviously fake - I've looked at it too much... Any other comments welcome too...

I like it. Based on your post it sounds like you're looking for any critiques or advise. All I'd say is it looks as if the photographed hand wasn't actually holding a coin, as the coin appears flat and two dimensional. If that's the case I'd simply suggest next time photograph the hand holding a coin. Also maybe try to figure out where shadows of the hand and coin may fall based on the lighting setup, and incorporate those onto the baby's face. But that's all that comes to mind, nothing major or obvious. Good work overall, definitely.

Thanks. Yeah i'm looking for anything that destroys the illusion like the coin and the shadow.
I thought about the shadow later and yeah that one is going to be tough. Was actually using a ring flash so thats my excuse why there is no shadow on the kid's face :)

Funny you mention the quarter looking flat. The hand actually was holding the quarter in the shot, but I failed at positioning the hand correctly and didnt get an angle of the quarter that worked well. So, I ended up skewing the quarter a tiny bit so it would go in the slot at the correct angle. Future work like this I need to pay more attention to my angles when shooting the separate pieces.

Thanks for taking a look though, appreciate the compliments, but even more so the critiques.

It's been forever since I've posted in this thread. Shot this for a clothing designer. The line is called DUK. Launching fall 2010.

i had an annoying time with flickr too, here is what i do:

(look at the caption of the picture on flickr to copy and paste the code)

i hope this helps,

its easier than that, when you are in flicker push the magnifier button on top of the image and copy the code they provide, the one that links directly to the photo. Its below the photo in one of two different boxes.
