Nikon rumors about the launch of a professional mirror less camera in April

I don't see it mentioned here, it is about a very strong rumor about the launch of a professional mirror less camera in April.

http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/exc...-mirrorless-system-in-april-with-sony-sensor/

The big thing is that it will be the first mirror-less camera aimed at the professional market. Will it be the super hybrid camera that we have all been waiting for. Since the start of the DSLR video revolution we all have hopped that Nikon would be game changer as they had no professional video market to protect. Until now as a base Nikon user I have been always disappointed in this regard. Lets hope that this will be what we have been waiting for. They have patented a lot of video tech, lets hope they were basing it on there mirror-less system which is more appropriate for it.

I think Nikon was blindsided by the interest in video in DSLR's. Canon definitely beat them in that market, and has held the lead since the 5DII came out. Now, some two years later, they are starting to realize that the "Pro-sumer" market's interest is leaning strongly towards a 1-camera solution. Something that will do a variety of video formats and frame rates, with auto-focus/tracking, easy to use full manual controls, and take 18+ mega-pixel FX sensor sized images, in 14-bit RAW.

They missed the mark, badly with the D7000, and it's hugely limited video ability. It does take decent pictures, but many, including myself, sat that one out. I'll wait on the sidelines and see what they come up with in a few months, as I still have some Nikon glass in my closet, but sold my pro-body a few months ago, and really don't need anything til spring time, or summer. I can rent until they figure out what they're going to do.

I can't tell you how much I wish that this were true.....and it may be true. I'll tell you the problem that WE have.....and why that statement LIKELY ISN'T true. The D7000 is old out EVERYWHERE on the planet. Nikon has never done cinema or video....even still. (They capture a "live view" stream...and offer 2 full controls...and one clunky control.) That said....their sales numbers are "hurting so bad" that they can't keep up with production of that camera where they "missed the mark". Do you think that THEY think, or more importantly that, do their sales numbers indicate that they missed the mark? According to their sales numbers, they hit a HOME RUN. You see....these numbers VALIDATE them NOT putting effort into a market they know next to nothing about....video.

I tell ya....I'm on your side. I HOPE that they think they missed the mark....and that putting MORE EFFORT into video will fix their "woeful sales numbers"....but....all the FACTS are telling them that they're doing GREAT, JUST THE WAY THEY ARE.

The real tell(s) for me, that Nikon isn't going to put much effort into video were:

  1. D3100 auto focus jello.....is SO SEVERE, that it looks like a "broken" video product. I don't care that the auto focus doesn't work great (it's the SEVERE jello response)....I'm just saying that they approved that to be shipped out the door....and it is WICKED BAD...and NOT a problem from their perspective. (I agree it's not a problem if Video has ZERO priority in your product line....it's only a problem if you're trying to shoot something that has ~SOME~ level of quality.) This didn't UPSET ME....but I knew that Nikon was telling us all...that video WOULD NOT be a priority for them.
  2. The TERRIBLE "work around" to change aperture on the D7000. Again...not the end of the world....but, certainly a TELLING FEATURE, that is STANDARD for everyone else....(duh...manual video controls means I need to change my aperture WHILE I'm in "Live View"....unless....you don't care how it is a pain....because you're not really planning on addressing video usage ANYWAY.)

These two things didn't make me mad....they just showed me "how interested" Nikon is in the video functions on their cameras.

I LOVE the image that comes out of the Nikon cameras for video....but the bottom line is that any video "breakthrough" that comes from Nikon will likely be "incidental" (like the D90 Live View capture aka DMovie function)....and largely unsupported.

DANG....do I hope I'm wrong. NOTHING would excite me more than to see Nikon make video a priority. That said....it's probably asking to much of a company that RULES the world in photography and lens production/innovation. ....but ~PLEASE~ prove me wrong Nikon!!! I'd love to buy a mirrorless Nikon cinema camera/photography camera with breakthrough video functionality/IQ. ....I'm not holding my breath though.....and they're selling D7000s faster than they can make them WITHOUT breakthrough video functionality.

Says who? Any leading authority? The camera is selling like hotcakes and the images it produces are outstanding. I have no idea why people say that Nikon wasn't interested enough in the video side of DSLRs and that Canon beat them and blah, blah. And that is too late for them. What part of Nikon did not have a video business side to borrow technology and know how from like Canon and Panasonic did people don't understand? We have to learn how to use logic properly and understand that Nikon is still developing their own video brand and is looking better and better with each new camera. And mark my words, in the not too distant future Nikon will introduce some remarkable professional video cameras that will produce some of the best looking footage around. Remember that thought.

Every part of my being hopes that you are right. Here's to Nikon making it happen! :) Cheers John!

Cheers John!

Cheers indeed! I got a feeling that if the mirror less happens it will be a pretty good cam. Rumors mention a new line o f lenses for it. In my opinion they really need to work on that if they want the autofocus to work like the GH1 and kit lens. The current Nikon lenses make too much noise auto focusing and for video they jump too much while trying to focus.

In some market with the advent of the Mirror less camera, Sony has taken the second place behind Canon in the total interchangeable camera sales. I have no doubt that camera like the d7000 but new market are emerging and I don' t think that Nikon wants to be out of it. Technology moves fast and market forces can change rapidly. See Nokia situation now, with IOS and Android. Hence all the patent on evil and video they have filled during the last year.

They missed the mark with the D7000? A camera that records beautyful video, with less compression artifacts than any other canon, more dynamic range, beautiful skin tones and way way less jello effect? ...

I agree in that, Nikon may be behind Canon in overall unit sales. But Im sure their numbers meet expectations. The d7000 may not be as user friendly as some of the other dslr makers, but the image quality it produces is as good or better in most cases. Everyone speaks of Canon mojo, and pani mojo. The nikon has their own Mojo, and it's sweet. The only reason I havent grabbed one, is the limited video features. This is the camera that should be hacked, if possible.

Well...aside from the lack of manual controls the only thing that really bothered me about its image is that dreaded color moire. Outside of that I think it has a very beautiful looking image that kicks ALL of the Canons in the tail.

By the way....what are your thoughts on the GH-2?

Nikon has never done cinema or video....even still.

Maybe not "pro" cameras, but they did make several Very high end Super8 cameras.

I suspect that in about 3-4 years all these cameras will be very similar and Nikon will have gotten a solid video product by then. Flip out LCD, variable frame rates, better video codec, auto-focus, full manual controls, etc. As far as bells and whistles go they might still tail Canon and Panasonic, but all the core functions, quality and controls will be there. In five years some of these cameras will be doing 2-4k resolution or at least 1080p raw.

Let's not forget that the Canons are working off an imager that's 2 yrs old. The d7000 is a kick ass still camera, which is why it's sold out btw.

I'm not holding my breath on Nikon but I would welcome a serious attempt (on the video side) to take the lead from Canon.

The guys from Fstoppers use Nikon for most of their videos. D300s they say in their blog. You get a few quick looks at their gear in this video. I find it hard to complain about Nikon. With any VDSLR you have to work around the camera. Same with Canon. Looking forward to getting a D400 or something.
