Nikon: "Probably manual control in later model or firmware"

I got this from my local Nikon support rep:

"[Manual control for video] will probably be added in a later model or as a firmware update for our existing models.

We are not yet informed when this is going to happen, or in what form this update will come, but we will definitively challenge Canon's video function somewhere down the line."

Let's just hope it's sooner rather than later...

Nikon, if you snooze,you loose....

Is that the exact email you got [inc. the 'defunetively' spell error?]?

I got 5 or 6 replies, all from different support staff (although all were asian), saying "We cannot comment on future releases" etc

It's translated from Norwegian, but it is what he said.

BTW funny that you managed to misspell my typo. lol. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

i don't think so. i've heard similar responses from nikon people i've spoken to. the problem is that i think those people are speaking with the same wishful thinking as all of us. the fact that he says he hasn't heard anything hints that this is just a rumor inside of nikon as well. they hear the rumors, listen to people who want manual control, they get vague pm's about the competition with canon, and add things together to form something that can't really be trusted even though it's probably honest and true. :-)

Precisely. I have been in contact with Nikon Sweden several times. And many times they just answer with a short - Thanks, we will look into this ore something like that. But I had an interesting conversation with one very nice gentlemen that have a bigger role at Nikon Sweden. And I listed all the con's about Nikon D90 and the D300s. And why Canon has done a better job (not speaking of the 30fps) and so on. He said that he would translate this and forward it to Tokyo. This isn’t a big deal but it was nice that he did listening and understood the concern.

Did he explain to you that the 5 minute record limitation is due to the 2GB maximum filesize?

;-)

2gb filesize limit? Really? It can't be the reason. Even if it is for compatibility with old hardware, why it can't create AVIs in sequence like most edit programs do in FAT32?

There is something strange in Nikon behavior, like they don't want or need to improve professional video capabilities on the DSLRs. After all, the D300s is a professional camera, the top of the line of the DX format. It doesn't make sense to make a feature that only pleases the HD Moms in a professional equipment.

I doubt it all are just technological issues. I suspect that Nikon believe that Video and Photo are indeed two independent markets and they want to design separated products to each. Maybe they are creating a mirrorless camera for the video market as nikonrumors pointed out.

everything that Nikon wants from us is to buy their lenses, I think, its from where they milk the professional market. The professional video market is a big market for lenses as the photo market, Nikon surely doesn't underestimate it.

The 5 minute limit is because of EU-laws. If a device can record for more than 5 minutes in one go, it would be taxed more. So there you go.

Every point and shoot that has video is taxed as a camcorder? Or cell phones? Or the 5DmkII? This argument is bogus.

well, I google some answers, and by the EU legislation the D90 and D300s could be up to 30 minutes of recording

On July 13, 2007, the Regulation and the Explanatory Notes were adopted by voting at the EU,
Customs Code Committee, Tariff and Statistical Nomenclature Section as follows:

Products that meet all the following criteria i.e. Resolution: 800×600 pixels (or higher) AND
Duration of a single sequential video recording: 30 minutes or more AND Frame rate: 23 frames per
second (or higher) shall be deemed as Video Camera Recorders (Camcorders).
Therefore, products with specifications that do not meet any one of the above three criteria shall be
deemed as “Digital Cameras.”

If Nikon don't come up with a new firmware, I wonder if there isn't any programming nerd that can make changes and his own firmware. I mean, people made new firmwares for DVD recorders and other hardware themselves.
I understand that it would be more complex for a camera, but maybe it's possible.

The problem isn't to write new firmware. The problem is how to get the current one out. How to modify it without breaking it and how to get it back in without bricking the camera. This takes time and costs money. I'm fairly sure i could do the actual programming fairly quickly. I've done some hacking on devices that have more or less open firmware. It's very basic stuff. Just so you understand what the problem is.

It would be wonderful! Ore if some company modified the D90. Like they did with the DVX and HVX. I would pay some money to get control and a better signal.
