Nikon Online Launch Event - 6/17/24 - Z6III

The EVF in the Z6III is going to be an improvement (for video) from the Z8, it looks like. That is a big deal for me.

If the Z8 had the flippy screen and improved EVF that the Z6III is rumored to have, I would have already bought it.

Nikon should do a Z9/Z8v mid-generation upgrade -- something they have occasionally done in the past.

We should have a GAS club where we pool our money to buy the latest game changer and each member gets to use it for a month. Then someone can buy it or we sell it so we can fund our next GAS camera of the year.

Looks like a nice camera. It is a little behind on dynamic range but not too bad. Makes me wonder what the Sony A7v & A7siv will be like. I would lean towards more dynamic range over 6k. And a fast readout which the Z6III has.

Is this camera really that exciting? Isn't it like an a7iv but better? I mean, they explicitly say they went partially-stacked to save money. It might be the latest thing and have many enticing aspects but it's not even supposed to be a world-beater

I don't even know what a world beater is! But for $2,500 you get 10ms rolling shutter, 6k internal RAW, waveforms, nice resolution screens etc... I think the specs are impressive for the money and will make the next Sony cameras that much better. Exciting is relative. If these specs were in a box camera I would not even notice. But in a major brand still/mirrorless release in the mid range it is a nice step forward.

it's overall best bang for buck in mid-range mirrorless hybrids. Especially considering the rear screen, evf + what bassman says above. AF is probably slightly better than the R6 II; but it will get smoked by the forthcoming Sony A7S IV (which will use this sensor; but 3x more phase-detect pixels). Low-light AF appears to be particularly good with the Z6III; but Sony will probably match/slightly beat that by end of 2024.

About the only thing I was disappointed was missing is shutter angle, open gate & anamorphic support. Panasonic still has best IBIS in this class by a decent margin, with the S5II.

I have legacy Nikon gear and am going to buy it + 24-70 2.8. For old glass, I really like the MF assist features on the Zf and they are also in the Z6III

Like Bass said:
+ 6k raw internal
+ high res bright flip out lcd
+ low price ($2,500)
+ no rolling shutter due to fast read out
Add to that
+ No 4k 60p crop
+ I've heard no over heating (without a fan)

The only cons for video
- IS isn't as good as Panasonic but comparable to Sony
- No dual recording
- AF is good but not as good as Sony in some situations
* I know Gerald Undone said it had slightly less DR but to me this seems so minute no one is going to notice.

Now why I wouldn't get it.
- Don't want to have sell my Sony and lenses and move to another eco system. It gets expensive trying to chase the latest mirrorless.
- I don't film in raw and internal raw while nice is expensive.
- I always wait 6 plus months for reviews from people who actually use the camera for real world jobs
- I would lean towards getting GH7 because for event work more dof, amazing hand held IS and having a set it and forget unmanned b cam with a fan that will not over heat is more useful to me.
- My work horse is camcorder stuff so putting money into a mirrorless isn't something that earns enough to justify it.
