Tokina 11-16/2.8
Nikon 17-55/2.8
Tokina 28-70/2.8
Nikon 50-300/4.0 ED (the beast!)
I learned to to live (work) with no iris ring on some of the lenses. A pain, but people learn to live with out an arm or a leg as well...
Optically, I am very happy with all, especially with 11-16 & 50-300...
interesting comment on the 17-35 not being sharp. Mine is so sharp it clearly outperforms 2 widely praised 21mm Zeiss ZF's that I compared it to. i sold the ZF because I saw no point in it. It did have a little glitch in the back focus though where it tracked fine from infinity to close except at focal distances right around 30mm where the BF slightly drifted. I could only see it on a collimater though and just double check my focus manually in that range which is just what I would do with a prime anyway.
Re lack of iris ring - you do realize that most of the Nikon adapters including the MTF have a ring that will grab the iris ring even on a G lens. Not very precise but very useable.
The Nikons are better lenses than the Tokina's or the Tamron's BTW. A little pricier but compared with PL glass.....
My understanding is that it was the 17-55mm that wasn't quite as sharp. The 17-35mm f2.8 is often cited one of the best lenses Nikon ever made. See Kenrockwell.com and others. I know my 17-35mm is fantastic.
