GH5 Nikon full frame getting raw out into atomos, whats that mean for Panasonic?

Raw over hdmi is completely possible and Nikon along with atomos are making it happen. Let’s hope this pushes Panasonic in the same direction with the GH line and future full frame, whether you’ll use it or not raw can be a powerful tool. Maybe black magic may jump in but I very much hope it won’t become a BRAW vs prores raw and rather a best of everything situation. In any case it’s exciting news to hear that it’s a possibility that may become available to a wide range of old and new products if enough noise is made for it!
 
I want to see what the Nikon Z RAW solution produces before jumping on the bandwagon. It does sound interesting.
 
It is using ProResRaw on the Atomos recorder, similar to what the EVA1 is doing, but will be interesting to see how it works out.
Not sure this is a “pure Raw” feed however, or a partially processed feed to get it through the HDMI connection.

Based on what I do, if it's not built into the camera I don't want to deal with it. It's bad enough I still have to deal with external audio recording. I'd rather take 10bit internal H.264/5 over external raw.

I'm pretty sure this is not going to be an either/or feature.They will still give you internal codec options.
 
Right now it means nothing for Panasonic. Not every user needs or wants raw and as an external solution it requires an invenstment in hardware that can capture the raw.

I hope in the future Panasonic will implement this as well since there is little reason why they can’t. Undercompressed 4k with three channels is a lot more data than a raw stream needs so we know the system can handle it. As long as a camera has a true uncompressed HDMI output it should be able to support this with effort and commitment from the manufacturer to update the firmware to allow this non standard format to send over HDMI.

We could see it as a firmware update on the GH5 or GH5S but I’m not going to hold my breath on that one. All really depends how far away a GH6 is. They could keep it as an incentive feature for the GH6 or if that is too far away and could potentially drive customers away from the GH5 and a future GH6 they could provide it as a firmware update much like they did with the v-log update late in th life of the GH4. Heck technically even the GH4 could do this which would be one heck of an interesting use case for the oodles of those used cameras floating around out there. I highly doubt the GH4 will get any more firmware updates but it sure would be a cool new feature of the camera.

External raw may be less than desirable for some users but it makes a lot of sense from a cost perspective. It means the users that have no interest in raw don’t need to pay for it. Those that do want/need it can pay the extra for it. DSLR cameras are also a long way off from a controller that can write raw video data at that speed or supporting internal media capable of recording any decent length of raw video for a usable length of time. Cfast media is great but not a realistic cost for many users who use a GH5 priced camera. Plus there is no way to suddenly add in Cfast media support to existing cameras so external raw offers an upgrade option that would otherwise be physically impossible. Even though the Pocket 4k supports Cfast media I’m willing to bet 9/10 users will be using more affordable external SSD drives to record raw.
 
Another thing to take into consideration is how raw works from the full sensor. Unless the GH5 can pump out 5.2k raw through HDMI we might be limited to the ETC crop for UHD and 4k video if they did implement raw through HDMI. The GH5 uses internal scaling to reduce the full 5.2k sensor down to 4k resolution and thats not how raw works. A ETC UHD or 4k crop on the GH5 is a larger crop factor than the GH4 was due to the extra resolution on the GH5.

The GH5s on the other hand would be absolutely perfect for UHD and 4k raw since both use the full sensor readout with no extra crop.
