Nikon D800

Hi folks,

I'm shooting on a D800 tomorrow night. I've not used one before so was just wondering if there was anything I need to watch out for?

The plan is to feed a radio mic into a H4n and then straight into the camera.

What's the record limit/battery life? Do I need a certain speed SD? etc

It's just a few talking heads so nothing overly fancy.

Thanks for your input.

About 1hr recording per battery. 20min clips at HQ, which I recommend. ISO 100-500 is best with deep blacks and DR being better at 400 because of artifacts with ISO 100. But ISO 100 is cleaner. I like neutral with dialed down contrast and one step of saturation dialed down. Contrast should be set to scene if you dont need the DR keep it closer to middle. Also depends on post or grading ofcourse. Dial in custom WB in menu and put it one to three steps toward magenta. Good luck!

Thanks for the input, I'll have a play around tonight and see what I can come up with :) Will probably do some light grading in post.

in addition to Stokstad, I would turn down the sharpness. Better sharpen in post than having moiree etc. in brickwalls, clothings or water ripples.
'Portrait' picture style might give you a little better skontones than 'neutral'.
Beware that only the green channel ist shown in the histogramm during shooting.

So the shoot went alright, thanks for your advice.

The lighting in the room was very poor and as a, low budget, solo shooter who walks to venues my own lighting wasn't really an option. Wish I'd borrowed a small LED cinelight now.

Anyway, I shot with a 24-70, F3.5, 24fps, ISO 800. I did break the shutter speed rule - had that set to 40. I didn't want to open the aperture any more as my focal plane was tight enough as it is, and I didn't want to boost the ISO for fear of noise.

Despite all that, I'm fairly happy with the result, considering. I think there is some slight correction to be done in post (looked great on the LV- not so keen on my PC monitor).

I shot a similar piece in the exact same room last year (for the same client) and that was on an AF101. I think I prefer the D800.

I'll try stick the finished piece up here when I'm done :)
