Nikon D800 with external monitor problem?

I just purchased an IKAN VK7i 7" monitor to go with my D800 and I am having a problem when viewing with both my on camera LCD and external monitor. When I start filming a new clip, my external monitor cuts out for about 1.5 - 2 seconds and then comes back on while recording the clip. When I stop filming the clip, the external cuts out again and then comes right back on in 1.5 - 2 seconds. Is this normal for this to happen with this camera or monitor? I have a friend that has a Canon 5D mk III with an SmallHD AC7 and the AC7 does not get interrupted at all.

Thanks for the reply! I wonder why it happens with the Nikon D800 and not with the Canon 5D mk III then. Does that camera stay at a constand 1080p for the steam?
