Nikon D800 crop mode?

I'm curious about how the D800 crop mode works. Because that's how I would be shooting video with it since I want to use S35 cinema lenses and would need the APS-C crop feature which is closer to S35.
Does it make the image softer like with the Nikon D4?
I wouldn't think it would affect sensitivity would it?
Any drawbacks in using the crop mode?
I would exclusively buy the camera to be used in crop mode as I don't have any Nikon glass only S35 glass.

Thanks!

No! The DX crop mode on the D800 does not have the same issues as the D4.
No! Sensitivity is affected by photo diode sensor size. DX mode just uses a smaller area of the 35x24 (approx) sensor than FX mode and they both use a 16:9 area for video which is smaller than the full size photo area.
Will increase the focal length of your lens by x1.5.

So what was macgregor on about it looking bad and not being a good idea?

Don't know! You will have to ask him. I have tried the same shot with both FX and DX and I can not see any quality difference, only smaller image area.:)

- lower resolution
- more aliasing

Basically the crop mode is about the same quality as recording 1080p in full frame sensor size, then cropping to DX size and resizing it back to 1080p.

I tried crop mode once as well, and I wasn't impressed. Haven't bothered with it since.
