Greetings to the community from Greece!

At the moment I only have one prime (Nikon 50mm f/1.8G) and preparing in the near future to acquire the rest of the series (20mm f/1.8G, 35mm f/1.8G, 85mm f/1.8G).
I know that the 50mm is on the cheaper price range but the focus ring just has a terrible feeling when you manualy pulling focus.

My question for those that have tried those lenses is:
Does the other Nikon primes have the same plasticky feeling as the 50mm?

I also work as a photographer on occasion (about 30%) so I need the fast autofocus.
The reason that I choosed the G series of lenses is for the quality and light weight (I am used to shoot very fast & light equipped).
Does the Sigma Art Series (35mm, 50mm) have a better quality manual focus ability?

I have also tried some Samyang VDSLR lenses and are just fine for video work but no autofocus and ridiculously big & heavy.
I can not afford to buy different lenses for video or photography. Do you have any experience?

there is no silky smooth focusing with any prime G lens ive tried. there is a roughness/friction/very light scratch feel when moving it.

you might consider older AI/AIS lenses for video only. they have an aperture ring and the focus is very nice, providing the aluminum cam inside is clean and free of gunk buildup over years. I had an 85 1.4 AIS I sold last year and I hate myself for that. wow it was buttery smooth to focus. they sell for around $350 used.

you should also look into the D series which has AF and aperture ring a focusing is smoother, but not perfect..by a long shot. the best were the MF lenses.

speaking of speed, the G primes are slow as crap compared to the older D. they also have this crap cheaply made junk. nikon cut corners and they went cheapskate full focre with their primes. plastic filter threading, plastic hood thread, cheap hood, very slow AF.
their quality has gone to the toilet. theyre greed shows and mostly because thyre trying to recoup money from their factory flood which was a huge loss for them. you want to know cheap feel? look at the POS 58mm 1.4g that sells for $1800. thats the ripoff of the century. im sure well get people commenting on the lens. if I bought overpriced crap, I too would say its the best thing since sliced bread. but the fact is the 50 1.8 can do 97% of what that lens can do. if anything, id take the sigma 50 ART over that in a heart beat.

speaking of..both are excellent lenses and very smooth to focus. should be a 24 1.4 ART coming out very soon. id say by february 2015 in the cp+ show. both outperfrom nikons versions. the 35 ART is a fabulous deal. sharper for half the money.it outperforms it wouthout any effort, even from 1.4. the 50 ART isnt such a great deal though. sharp as hell and great bokeh. but the price difference isnt enough to give up on the nikon. if the price was $600, I would buy. Im waiting for the 85 ART. no news on that yet.

btw you dodged the bullet regarding buying the 1.4g because speed is slooooooooww as molasses to focus.

see this here..1.8 is twice as fast as 1.4

and here the 85mm 1.8 g and d. the d makes more noise by a lot by for me and shooting weddings, I never had an issue. it might be critical to you.

Thank you very much! Yoy've been very helpfull.

I might take the Sigma ART series route. My only concern is the weight and balance for a smaller body such as D750.
I must try one before buy.

There's always the battery grip for the balance issue. I have one on my D700 and I'm also getting the 750 this Friday. I have a feeling it's going to feel weird with 2.8 zoom lenses but I remove it form the 700 when using primes like the 50 and 28.

Rocketman is right about nikon lenses. They look and feel ridiculous next to say the new Sony lenses or the AIS ones. I hadn't made the connection to the money loss from the factory flood. It may also be the low yearly gross compared to the projected one. They have good quality though and they're light. And yes, you made a wise choice to go with the 50 1.8. I have the 1.4 and it's a nightmare for photography. I'm actually thinking of swapping it with a 1.8. It's sharper at 1.8 too. Check digitalRev for that matter. I am never getting another 1.8 from Nikon. Especially after I bought the 28 one.

I recommend the 28 1.8. It's very fast, focuses very close and is among the sharpest of Nikon lenses (your eyes will tell you that but Dxo mark confirms). Sigma ART series is what I'm looking at too but I am seriously thinking of purchasing the Nikon 24-120 4 VR II simply because I will be able to handle a variety of jobs easier. I wish I was only doing cinema and not care about vibration reduction but that's life.

There's not a lot of Nikon users here in Greece so if you live in Athens like me, drop me a line.

@Homey
Thank you for your reply. I live in Crete but the next week I'll be in Athens for a payed job.
I mostly shoot video and about 30% of my work is photography. I have been shooting with Panasonic (GH2 & GH1) mirrorless cameras for a long time and I have some nice vintage old lenses collection.
Too bad they don't fit on nikon bodies. I also had some lenses from Samyang the VDSLR cine edition and I am used to this butter smooth focus and aperture ring. Too bad they were for Canon mount and went for sale.
I always liked the Nikon "color science" so I made the big step to go for F.F.
Never been fan of Canon, Sony and Panasonic color character especialy on skin tones.
There are some difficulties the last 5 years or so from the so called artificial "economic crisis". I must choose wisely, there is no much room for expansive tests.
