Nikon D7100 codec

Hey people. I am in the market to buy a camera. How is the codec of the D7100? It is 24mbps and so is af100, c100 and fs100. I think nikon has h264 implementation. Correct me if I am wrong. How much gradability is there compared to the first gen canon dslrs. I want to buy the GH3 but being wide angle lover that puts me in a difficult position. I really loved 7d, more than 5d mk2. So comparing to it and keeping narrative filmmaking: shorts and indie features, in mind. The codec is the only thing that confuses me hence mu question. Thanks people.

It is not just the codec that matters, it's what happens before the footage goes to the card. The C100 has an incredible implementation of AVCHD for example. Many of the DSLRs do processing "quick and dirty" compared to dedicated camcorders. The D7100 and D5200 have a great sensor and very little aliasing and moire...plus if you wanted to you could go with an external recorder since they have clean HDMI outputs.
That being said the GH3 at 14mm is really wide in the 16:9 aspect ratio, so if I were you...I would not let that be the deciding factor. In photos with a normal aspect, 14mm is not super wide (like 18mm on the APS C sensors, or like 28mm on a 5DMK3) but all of those: 14mm on a GH3, 18mm on a 7D, or 28mm on a 5DMK3 are PLENTY wide when you are in the video mode. For ULTRA wide on a GH3 there is the 7-14 at 7mm...you can capture any vista, tall building, etc that you want.

I really appreciate that you took time to answer my question, pulpfiction007. The thing is that I am in Pakistan and if I buy a GH3 I would have to import it from UK as I am from PAL land. I was heavily considering the GH3 with vintage primes as I dont like zooms. There is no wide lens in vintage lens that could help me on Gh3 as they were made for full frame. Wides are expensive. That is why I am looking at Apsc or full frame. Many people on different forums have recommended me apsc format.

So i was looking at d7100 as Apsc or 5d mk2 for full frame but to be honest for filmmaking I really like apsc. What would you suggest me other than Gh3?

I would go with the D5200 or D7100. Both have the same video functionality, so if the smaller body and less dials doesn't bother you...you get an articulating screen with the D5200. The 70D from Canon might be nice too, but we'll have to see if they have gotten rid of the moire/aliasing issues.

Also it would be great if I could get raw sample videos preferably with flat settings, may it be natural toned down, flaat or cinestyle. Subject can be anything. Thank you.

* I think the codec in D7100 and D800 is the same, but I'm not 100% sure
* You're right that ultra-wide vintage lenses are not very good. My widest is a Leitz Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8; not cheap, and it's already softer in the corners than I would like. Everything else I've tested was a lot worse: http://www.similaar.com/foto/lenstests/lenstestsa.html I would go for a modern wide-angle, both for APS-C and for m43.

Thanks Samuel! I read your comments on why you almost bought the D5200. Some nice thoughts over there especially regarding the skills vs the gear. Thanks again.

Any clue what the longest 'take' you can make on the largest cards in both slots of a D7100 might be?

The longest take is 20 minutes (at least for 1080p, haven't tried 720p). There is a countdown clock on the LCD. It doesn't matter what cards you have.

Generally you have to go to an external recorder to get more than 20 minutes of 1080P.
A camera battery pack may be required to go over 1 hour.

I would suggest a V1 with 10mm f/2.8 except it does not have clean HDMI out.
So recordings will be limited to 20 minutes.
You can start a second recording immediately but the camera will overheat after a few.

If you cannot afford a D800, the D5200 would probably be your best bet.
