Nikon D600 affordable full frame DSLR

Ok, so $2100 for the body, plus $1000 for a ninja2, and you have a full frame sensor going out on 8-bit 422 to prores, with external 4.3" 800x480 screen, for less than the price of a 5D3, or a VG900, or an A99 with external recorder. Nice. Let's hear what the first users think about it.

First Sony, now Nikon, maybe the GH3 soon too? If nothing else, I hope Canon is feeling the heat about clean HDMI.

Good time to be a consumer. (Unless too many people own Canon EF glass & are unwilling to switch. Then these other cameras won't be successful & Canon won't have to compete & we end up with VHS instead of the superior picture quality of Betamax.)

I like the body of the A99 and the video out of the D600 [based of the very few samples so far].
I would rather have 24mp full frame however if the GH-3 can give me the A99's body and = > D600 video, I could go with 16mp MFT.

These are interesting times indeed but somehow I still feel that we have not seen the best yet on the DSLR front.

Do you guys understand this statement from the Nikon web site:

When recording a movie through an HDMI interface, the output image may be
smaller than the value set with the "image size/frame rate" menu.

http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d600/features05.htm#a13

How is the image "smaller"? As in less than 1920x1080?

I assume they mean that the image is sized for the LCD, with space around it for the camera info. Then when you remove that from the HDMI output, the actual image size is slightly smaller?

I also assume there is no net impact on the output?

Thanks!
Michael

anything we say would be speculation,

but i think you can get 1920x1080 clean output from hdmi without recording internally at least.

there may be a limit on a 1920x1080 output (probably 1920x1080 at 29.97) when recording internally.

i think this camera would be a great dslr for stills.

From the same Nikon website:

Note: Microphone sensitivity and headphone volume cannot be changed during movie recording.

Too bad they didn't fix this issue from D800.

On the positive side, FX framesize seems to be closer to full frame on the D600. D800 has a weird 1.2x crop in FX video mode.

Is it just me... or does the footage from this and the new Sony FF cameras look almost identical? Down to the aliasing etc...

I'm not ragging on it, just wondering if anyone else got that impression. (And, yes, I know Sony makes this sensor. But, that doesn't automatically mean they should look the same.)

Huh.. Yeah that Sony clip is horrendous. =T

I was more so going on overall look, but I guess maybe all this stuff is startin' to look the same to me. xD Carry on.

Got ya...

Actually I've thought that about most DSLR's but still some have a little less bad and a little more good to my old eyes.

You mean ... TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS .... THREE CAMERAS .... A QUEST ........

Jack Kerouac ... Dharma Bums ... On the Road .... Brokeback Mountain ...

I guess these are adventure cameras?

I am waiting for the new T&A, do-it-yourself, porn web site cameras to be announced. Does anyone know when those are supposed to be announced? :)

The youtube video is very nice, except that with the youtube compression you cannot know about sharpness and detail. Because in terms of dynamic range it seems very very good. Sad that Nikon does not give us some log profile and 10 bit, because the footage are very cinematic. Rolling shutter also seems to be very good. Hope we will see some better files to judge.
