Nikon D5300 video samples.

I think he is probably being cautious. It's as straightforward as his instructions - I didn't have any problems.
I wouldn't use it indiscriminately though. I'd think that the 5300 is probably fine with the neutral profile for most stuff. We're just trying to see how much dynamic range can be gotten out of the camera ...

@Daniel:
That exposure slider in Lightroom is only accurate if you use it on an image that is purely linear or purely log. On anything that doesn't have a deep mathematical image (and that includes Flaat, which is near-log but not purely log), Lightroom is just guessing how my curve works.

@Stu:
I have to ask caution for newbies. I don't want to be half-responsible for a bricked camera. It's never happened AFAIK, but you can never be too sure. Read again the camera's instructions manual if you feel you need to. Make sure you know what you're doing.

I've just replaced my Flaat 11 video test with a less compressed file that shows quite a bit more detail. Download the original file for best quality. Grading details in description on Vimeo page:

Any software is going to have the same problem: unless it knows exactly how the picture profile maps brightness, it's just a rough approximation.

Thanks Samuel, I thought it seemed simple. Matt, assuming that I'm grading in post, under what conditions would you shoot Flaat vs. neutral w/contrast dialed down?

I'm still figuring this out for myself. Will post if I come to a conclusion ...

First outing with my new MonoCam (Glidecam style stabiliser).
D5300 + Nikkor 24mm 2.8 AI-s, 50p conformed.
I need a wider lens and more practice.

Nice test Matt. What are your first impressions of the monocam? Easy to balance? Reasonably well made?

I like it very much. It has a very simple, effective and compact design. It's extremely well made. I find it pretty quick to balance now I've got used to it.
I'd choose this over a Glidecam even if they were the same price.

EDIT: I've just realised I had my screen gamma calibrated to 1.8 for all of my D5300 tests so far, so everyone watching at 2.2 (most of you I imagine) - if you thought the shadows looked crushed, that is why!
If you play with the download file in your NLE you can see there is more info there ...

Ooops ...

Hello, everybody, I've not conducted formal tests for D5300. I've done some perceptual tests, based on FLaat12 developed a preset that will share after some more testing.. Thanks Samuel for your work!

Hi Oleg, nice to hear you back. If you have time could you just do the test between the D5200 and D5300 at 100 ISO like you did between D5300 and Canon 5dmark3. We could see if the there is a difference in Dr between the D5200 and D5300. The D5300 looked so much better than the 5dmark 3, it really made me curious if Nikon could have change the default DR with the new expeed 4.

It would also be interesting at different if you could do the same at different ISO, but the a 100 ISO high contrast scene would really be appreciated.

Nikon D5300: Slowmotion

Hello guys, I'm an happy owner of this interesting HDSLR.
The following video shows some slowmo examples shot at 1080p/60p, then conformed at 25p in Edius 6.55.
Some sequences were originally shot with Samuel Hurtado's Flaat_11 profile (the lady feeding pigeons, the man running up the stairs, the town views from the top of a tower), while the remaining clips were grabbed with default NL Picture Profile.

Hi everyone.

This is my first post here at DVX. I´ve been reading carefully all this thread. After watching almost every video sample available on the net, I´ve decided that this Nikon D5300 is what I need.

I need to have a DSLR with a decent DR, good in low light, without moiré and not as expensive as the Canon 5D Mark III. So right now, I think that the D5300 is the only one to go.

I plan to buy it with a kit lens, as I find that they are good enough to take photos and family videos, but I also want to buy some prime lenses.

The lenses I plan to buy at first are: Samyang 16mm T2.2, Samyang 35mm T1.5 and two Nikkor AF-D 50mm F1.8. I did not said that I´ll buy a second D5300 body, as some of the things I´ll shoot will be better covered with two lenses.

So my question is: Does this Nikon work well with manual lenses? I mean, if we still have manual control over the ISO and shutter speed during recording.
I know that the aperture cannot be modified in live view and that´s why I have decided to go with fully manual prime lenses for most of the video work.

Many thanks to everyone for the information and video samples. And sorry for my bad english ;)

You should be able to control shutterspeed, ISO, WB in manual mode, and with manual lenses just dial in aperture on the lens. Since its so much cheaper than 5d mark 3 you could buy a shoulder-rig, follow-focus, Zoom h5n and a ninja 2 for the same price!
