Nikon D5100 with Sigma 10-20mm/ 4-5.6 says "Lens Not Attached"

I tested this lens on a D3100 and it worked fine so I'm not sure what may be going on. The lens is recognized about 1/5 of the time; not very consistent.

I did hear that the older lenses with the serial 220000 and under may need to have the firmware upgraded but the Sigma reps said that wasn't true. They weren't very open to any diagnisis other than damaged pins, though I assured them that the pins were fine.

Firmware issue for the lens? Gremlins? Anything?

Hoping someone can shed some light on this. I love this lens and it's a shame I can't use it.

Thanks

does this problem happen with any other lens?
are the contacts clean? (both in the camera and in the lens)

The camera is only a week old and the kit lens (18-55) works fine, which leads me to believe the problem is the Sigma. I used a drop of alchohol and a Q-tip and gave the a once-over. It did recognize the lens, but 15 minutes later it was back to "Lens not attached."

Then it seems to be a problem of electrical contact. But no idea why it wouldn't happen on a different body.

Okay. It worked flawlessly on a Nikon D300S. We dettached and reattached several times and got no error messages.

I'm flabbergasted at this point. I would have thought that the D3100 and D5100 would have the same firmware but it simply isn't working.

Anyone have any suggestions?
