Nikon Coolpix "A" vs Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5

Which one do you think is better?

Both are 18mm, the Coolpix "A" essentially is a lens that is fixed to a body for $300 less than the Zeiss 18mm F3.5 and is faster at F2.8.

Anyone done any tests?

You are comparing a fixed lens pocket camera to a single lens without a camera and asking which is better?

Is this some kind of trick question?

Oh thought it was 18mm equivalent. Anyhow no it is not a trick question. It is a very valid question when you see these as film tools.

It's like that movie "Searching for Sugar Man", that movie made us think, which is better? Super 8 camera or an iPhone with the 8mm app?

This Zeiss lens is designed for Full Frame 35mm format cameras, while the Coolpix "A" camera is an APS-C format camera which is about half the size of the 35mm Full Frame format.

No, it's only valid to you because you may have some plan in your head that we are not privy to, or may or may not own other pieces of gear which may or may not make one choice relevant over the other. One is an all in one pocket camera, the other is just a lens.

Which is better.... This KIA Forte, or this wheel for a Ferrari Enzo?

Yeah if we knew what camera you are pairing the zeiss lens with and that application you are using it for then it may be more answerable. For now however its kinda still apples and oranges.

Lol, or which is better an all in one Tascam 24 track recorder or a Focusrite preamp.
The answer on the individual quality should be clear, the Zeiss lens is better than the one on the Nikon, the Focusrite preamp is better than the one on the Tascam, and the Ferrari wheel is better than the one on the KIA forte.
But in each case the individual better parts don't do anything- the camera/recorder/car will get you to where you're headed. The only way to compare is to add a lot more to the lens/preamp/wheel and find out if the cost is worth the better parts. (Lol... BTW I know I'm taking this to new heights of ludicrous land!)

It seems like a legitimate question: if you have to take a wide shot at 28mm FF equivalent, what's the best bang-for-buck way to get it? buy a very expensive Zeiss lens to add to your current camera, or get a new camera with a 28mm equivalent lens?

That being said, I have no idea about the answer. Even worse than that, I'll add a new option to the mix: NEX-5N with Sigma 19mm f/2.8; cheaper than any of the previous options, and it's a surprisingly awesome little camera-lens combo. http://www.similaar.com/foto/flaat-5n/review.html
