New release from ... wait for it ... Nikon.

The big thing is the full frame BSI sensor, should give a pretty darn good low light performance.

Next day edit - it looks like the Nikon Canada channel was fake .. or maybe that Nikon Canada channel was fake...

So, in its stead .. the Camera Store boys, a Nikon rep and beer

45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor (8256 x 5504) with no low pass filter capable of full resolution 7 fps bursts with AF/AE (boosted to 9 fps when paired with the optional MB-D18 battery grip and EN-EL18a/b battery)
$3300

For video:
Full-frame 4K UHD at 24/30 fps
Full HD 1080p at up to 120 fps
Internal codec: MPEG-4 H.264
HDMI out: 4k UHD 4:2:2 8-bit

No mention of log or flat profiles, so I would expect DR to be exactly like it is o the D810. This is what makes this camera completely uninteresting *to me*. Give it a log profile with more DR than an a7SII+slog3 and then I can get excited about it.

The only hope is the xqd card which would I think make decent fat rates possible.

Possible and actually done are far apart.

I'm interested in it for stills upgrade to my d600 - 10bit vid would swing it

Pretty incredible specs, it's somehow both a studio and a sports camera at the same time. Very versatile.

I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment as to whether I sell off all my Nikon gear (a couple of D300s and D800e) and move to pro mirrorless with Fuji or Sony. Or sell my D300s and pickup a 24-70mm for the D800e.

It's a tough call. I love the pro layout and ergonomics of the Nikons, and I also prefer the optical viewfinders of the DSLRs, but weight is an issue, and I also want to set myself up with a proper underwater stills kit (and mirrorless has some clear advantages there.... decisions, decisions!

Customers have to pressure Nikon into having both Log and a higher bit rate, which ought to be doable with the QXD cards. 5D MKIV added Log - of course, it's still heavily cropped - and its recent footage looks really good. D850, however, is starting out as heavily video crippled.

How do we know that .. are data rates published.

Also could one not build faux log in the menu?

Id love it to be good but don't hold my hopes.

I tried this on the D800, with my Flaat profiles. You can make it log-like (i.e. flat), but not very wide. In terms of DR, the best I could manage was still 2 or 3 stops short of what the a6500+slog.

One of the items (DP review?) metions rolling shitter.

It also slags of the pixbridge

Still transmission to client is of interest to me stills wise.

So

shitty stills transmission
rolling shutter 4.2.0 video
no log

Not impressed thus far! ?

BTDT brother.

Sold my D810 and Nikon glass and went Fuji XT-2.

Love it.

This is the sexiest stills-camera ive seen in a long while! Im sure the video files will look pretty good aswell.

On one hand I'm disappointed and surprised that Nikon didn't integrate more video features to try to compete with everyone else. On the other hand, I'm surprised and thankful for the video features that Nikon has added (all-be-it some of them only working in HD). I've been holding out for Nikon to come out with a killer bridge camera, but the D850 is too little too late; I've already resorted to picking up a Sony for video, and keep my D7000 for stills. I'd love to see Nikon come out with a proper Mirrorless camera that has an APS-C sensor.

I have become addicted to Canon's dual auto focus for run and gun, If Nikon can either come up with a good video auto focus or give us 10bit external to use the camera in studio settings and chromakey, then I will consider it. Give us both and will surely buy one. Will wait and see what the auto focus is like as I do a lot of run and gun type shoots and would like a camera like this on a gimbal.

One thing that bugs me every time I see the D850 is the weird aspect ratio of the sensor. It's supposed to be 36x24mm, but in all pics it looks like this:

Edit: FORGET THAT, I'M JUST DUMB, THAT'S NOT THE SENSOR, IT'S THE MIRROR!!! Ah, this old time mirrored thingies...

Also: no idea how Nikon reads and downscales its images from that sensor in video mode, but the easy way would be to start with a 1.075x horizontal crop (7680x4320 out of the original 8256x5504) and then skip every other pair of lines.

According to a couple of reviews I read, the 850 does pixel binning rather than line skipping.

Its interesting to me that Nikon doesn't step up on the video side of their game.

They are uniquely positioned to really take significant market share. I don't know why that just don't put a little more focus on integrating more video features into their cameras.

I think they have a secret deal with sony to be rubbish.

Its dissapointing to me. No pro would buy a DSLR that didnt do raw, why would a pro buy a vid cam that doesnt at least to 10bit

Any DSLR that isn't mirrorless will have crippled video as it is a secondary function.

I am surprised people are still even buying DSLRs for pro video use. My 80D from a year ago has came in handy here and there on a gimbal or as an alternative angle but if I were buying something small and relatively cheap as a b-cam today, it would be the Fujinon XT-2. Even when I stop using the 80D for video, it is a great stills camera, I have done a few portrait sessions with it, it can capture beautiful images.
