Nikon 18mm Zoom WITH Aperture Ring - ???

I'm looking for a Nikon DX lens to use on my Nikon D7000, that zooms from 18mm to at least 50mm, that HAS an aperture ring. I don't care if it's AF or manual.

I just want a wide zoom DX lens that has an aperture ring so I can control the aperture ON the lens, and NOT within the camera.

I've been searching and searching, and can't find one.

If anyone knows of a lens that will fit that criteria, please let me know ASAP.

Thanks much.

Hi,

I don't think there are Nikon DX lenses with an aperture ring. The only ones I know of are FX and older MF lenses. A good one is the Nikon AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED Wide Angle which does indeed have the aperture ring, but it's an FX lens.

Another idea that might be easier to do is to get a Fader ND filter for your lens. Just leave your lens on the optimum aperture for your scene and just turn the Fader ND to smoothly dial down the light going into the lens.

Hope this helps.

Hi back, and thanks for the reply.

I'll check into that lens.

There IS at least one DX lens that has an aperture ring, and that's Nikon's mid-grade 70-300mm zoom. I know, 'cause I have one.

What I'm looking for is a wider one.

Thanks again, and be well.

I don't think anything like that exists, apart from the previously mentioned full-frame lens.

Sigma has a 17-35mm f/2.8 which is fairly cheap but not very compact as it is also designed to be used with Full frame cameras.

For what reason do you want a DX lens? Is it because you want a smaller lens or because of price? Because any of the full-frame lenses will also work with a the D7000.

Remember DX sensors were basically invented after AP rings were on the way out and certainly after MF was considered old school - nikon wise no new nikon has had an ap ring for years

Thanks, but I know there are plenty of full-frame lenses. I have many of them myself. I was just looking for one that would start the zoom "as wide" as 18mm for a DX size sensor. As far as I know, any full-frame lens, even a prime, would be a fish-eye at that size coverage.

Yes, money has a little to do with it, because I don't want to spend a "fortune", but quality is important too.

I'm just trying to get around this problem with the Nikon D7000 not allowing you to change f-stop while in movie mode, which is a REAL drag for the kind of pro work I do.

Hey, if there isn't one, there isn't one.

are you sure you cant change the Fstop in movie mode ?

if its like the D3s you have to do it before you enter LV or something annoying but it can be done can it not?

Yes, I can, Morgan. But, when I'm doing professional videoing, it becomes VERY annoying having to take it out of LV every time I want to change the f-stop.

You see, once I have set it as you describe, if I then adjust my shot by zooming, or panning, or etc, before I start rolling, the f-stop will change automatically, and there is no way to override this. So, I will then have to take it out of LV, adjust f-stop, and put it back in LV again. It's a real pain in the a**!!

This is something Nikon MUST resolve. I don't know yet if this is a firmware or hardware problem, but it's a ridiculous problem for professional work.

Then I think you need the 17-35, maybe a cheapo prime.... or a canon body

I guess you are right but check very carefully, If the exposure changes when you pan you do not have it in a proper manual mode

If it changes when you zoom on a variable ap zoom lens that should be expected

On the D3s I cant remember how it was done - but I can remember it was non intuitive and annoying

Unfortunately the lens you are looking for does not exist.

DX lenses are all G-type (the ones without aperture rings).

The closest you can get is the Nikon 17-35 f/2.8.

Also, I only played around with a D7000 for a few days, but I'm fairly sure the settings stayed where I set them in manual mode. Are you using a zoom with a variable minimum aperture, such as the kit lens?

Yea, I think it is. That could be part of the problem. But, it still does not solve the problem of having to take it out of LV every time I want to change f-stops. And, THAT is the real thing here.

Thanks to everyone for the help.
