Nikon 17-55 or Tamron 17-50

I'm not sure which one to get. I can get the Tamron for half the price of the Nikon.

I'll be using it on my Af-100 when I buy on the 18th?

Any advice?

Nikon price 650

Tamron price 300-350

I'm not really tight on the budget but If I can save 300 bucks and use the money maybe for a tokina 11-16mm might be better.

But I want the best optics obviously.

Haven't touched the tamron. All lenses in this range tend to flare like crazy. I've used the Nikon 17-55 and been very very happy. Just make sure the focus ring in yours isn't stiff. Some copies I've used have that issue.

Ive used The 17-55 is really good. Ive heard of good things about tameon as well but have never used it

I can't speak to the 17-50, but I have the tamron 28-75 and I can't stand hoe jerky the zoom is. It produces a great image though! On the few occasions I needed to zoom while shooting, I would have really liked the Nikon 25-70.

More importantly, where on earth can you pick up a Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 for $650?!

Mine is my workhorse for photography, and it's hard to fault - sharp, contrasty and built like a tank, it's a lovely piece of glass.

lloyd - I recommend the Panasonic 14-50 f2.8-3.5 for $599 new or the Olympus 12-60 f2.8-4.0 for $696 used from Amazon. Autoexposure and autofocus with a 4/3 to m4/3 adapter ($104 used from Adorama).

Personally, I'm giving my Nikon and Tamron glass back to my wife to use on her D50 - manual lenses are too much work for me ;-)

Welcome to m4/3!

FOr $650, no question about it. Get that Nikon!
Tamron is OK optically, very poor mechanics, chintzy focus ring. Only reason I got it was the Nikon is normally 3-4x the price.
