Nikkor 28-70mm f2.8

The lens is excellent for use on the AF100.

It is fast , sharp and well built. It is satisfyingly weighty and I use a lens support with it.

Note of caution: It is a stills type lens . It is not a zoom (but capable of small pushes) .

I consider it a variable prime and an excellent companion to my Nikkor 17-35mm for a two lens solution.

See my signature.

I have it attached to my AF100 right now, using the Novoflex adapter, which allows me to control aperture. I believe it's a heavy/long enough lens to warrant a support.

I use the aperture ring on the lens and an Adaptimax Adapter.

Not sure why mkfotos uses the adapter to control aperture?

Stephen, Shooter, mkfotos, Logan - Thanks for your input.

I recently spoke to someone who uses this lens on a AF100 and they do not use support. This is my preference. Is it safe?

Also, is there a reason to buy an Adaptimax over a Novaflex adapter or visa versa?

Finally, are there any recommended places to buy the lens? $1,100 to $1,400 seems to be the going rate depending on condition.

Thanks again,

Mark

Its your lens and your camera... but you also need to consider that at times, there will be hands on the lens (ie pulling focus).
This can give you an unwanted image shift unless extreme care is taken or the the lens is well supported.

Everything he said.

You REALLY want to use support with this lens. I use the Redrock: http://store.redrockmicro.com/Catalog/Accessories/microLensSupport

The reason is both (A) because the lens exceeds the AF100's weight rating for the mount (and keep in mind it's even more because you'll have an adapter on it as well), and, (B) as Shooter has pointed out, if you're going to use it with a Follow Focus, you won't get the noticeable shift when you pull focus that you'd get without it.

If you don't have a need to control aperture (i.e. if, for example, the 28-70mm and 17-35mm Nikkors and others with aperture rings are your only F-mount lenses) then save some money (and, IMHO, step up in quality) and get the Voigtlander adapter.

I got my lens on eBay for $1,000 - but this can be really risky; I waited a long time for the right lens and seller - but even then it's a crap shoot. I got lucky and got a mint, as-new sample at a good price. I wasn't as lucky with the first purchase of an 80-200mm Nikkor, though.

Hey Steve. I am still keen to see or know what Duclos did for your lenses in the cine mod.

They geared the focus rings for me, de-clicked the irises, and added 80mm fronts. I passed on getting the zoom rings geared (didn't foresee a situation where I would need that) but they offer that as well. They are great people, and do great work.

I will post photos (as you requested in the other thread; just haven't had time yet).

(With a couple of my other Duclos lenses, for comparison)

Left-to-right:

1) Nikon AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8 - Duclos cine-modded
2) Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8 - Duclos cine-modded (discussed in this thread)
3) Nikon AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8 - Duclos cine-modded
4) Duclos 11-16mm T2.8 Tokina rebuild
5) Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 - Duclos cine-modded

Note how all lenses have common 80mm mattebox-friendly fronts, and how they used different thickness focus gear rings to achieve a common diameter to integrate with a follow focus nicely.

I do 5 or 6 segments a month for Fox Business Channel. This lens stays on my AF-100 90% of the time (true run and gun). The only time it comes off is for a Zeiss 18mm Compact Prime. I Love this lens.
