I would like to make a night shot in the city. Of course I cannot do it in the middle of the nigth, but then when should record it?
and I cannot do it in the evening.
at what time should I do it in the morning? or should I do it at midday?

I suggest for you to do it midday, that way you wont have any extreme shadows from th sun while it rises or sets, instead, when you turn it into night in post, it will look like a luminant light, one that the moon would give off. n Although I did happen to film a scene on a rooftop in NYC, I did it in the morning when the sun was at about 45degree angle. It had alot of shadows cast, but when I turned day to night in post, it acually gave a really cool effect. I beleive you should do a test shot, take the same shot at multiple times of the day and apply your "night" effect, and see what look best suits your needs

I'd suggest filming around 4:30-5am, you've got enough luminance from the rising sun so it shows the city, but it is subtle and diffused... you can color correct it and blam. You're set.

Why ("of course") can you not do it in the middle of the night ?

Do you want the buildings and streets with lights on or off ?

well there are several scenes in the city, and one part of them are darker. I cannot provide energy for the lamps in the middle of the city...

I will try 4:30. yesterday I tried to get up at 4am, but (I think you know what happened)

if I do a shot at midday, what kind of ccorrection should I use? are there any tricks?
