Night Footage inside GH1 Private folder

Ok, so I have some more footage to share.

As per requested the entire 'PRIVATE' folder is available for everyone who needs the file structure to remain intact. No changes were made. No transcoding etc, etc...

Location: Sakae, Nagoya (Japan)
Time: dusk and shortly thereafter
Camera: GH1 in 720 (SH mode), ISO 1600, wide open (F4 on the stock lens), AWB, shutter 1/30 (although there is some debate as to whether this really means 1/30), Intelligent contrast: off, Auto focus on for some of the shots; off for others, Film type: Vibrant (camera's stock vibrant setting)...hmmmm think that's about it...
7 clips in all, different settings, available light only (some darker places others well lit)

I hope this adds to the ballooning information about this remarkable little cam

Thanks again to Daniel L for the server space.

Cheers

Just checked this out on my ps3 at home on the 52" 1080p LCD. For the most part it looks fabulous. There is some macroblocking in shots of the sky, and a few aliasing issues, but DANG that footage is clean looking. Especially the last scene with the people walkking past the store.

I can't WAIT to get this camera and pair it with my fast Canon FD glass.

Thanks for the post! And thanks Daniel for lending bandwidth. Fast server btw.

I had to import it with Toast, still couldn't use final cut. Looking at the directory the files aren't all sequential and it looks like some clips are missing. But that didn't stop me from looking at footage. First four clips look like 60P and the later ones I think are at 30P.

Yeah the private folder should import easily into fcp but this one doesn't. Had to use toast to see footage. I would like to get one private folder without any changes to the file and see if fcp easily log and transfers it because fcp has had issues in the past with panasonic cams.

Anyway, many thanks sonicstates for the upload.

Mico is right. If you do ANYTHING to thefolders (remove files, etc) then they don't work properly.

Barry might know how to do it properly, otherwise you have to shoot exactly what you want to upload then upload.

That's how I did it.

Gotta say sonicstates the footage looks stunning. You've done alot of work already and I hate to ask you but could you upload a private folder untouched with just two 1080 24p shots with panning day or night. I'll understand if you can't. Thanks again the night stuff was fantastic.

In 00025.MTS, the tree on the right side of the frame is turning to mush. At first I thought it was just out of focus, but the people walking by it seem much sharper. Does this look weird to anyone else?

Also, thanks for posting, sonicstates!

Daaaaaammmnnn! FCP really doesn't like me touching at all...I deleted a few really crap shots so the sequence was from that point...well....shot. I'll start fresh tonight and not change a single thing... 1080 24p panning day or night...probably night...
Glad the footage turned out alright...my crappy I-0 Data LCD screen makes me cry big tears...I need to see the stuff on a real monitor.

Ha. I understand you not wanting to post bad footage but that interior shot night was so good it will redeem any future shots you think are bad. Thanks .

It is literally raining on my parade here so it might have to be interior stuff or maybe some daylight shots tomorrow if the weather clears.
Mico, when you say, 'pan' do you mean neck wrenching, hospitalization kinda stuff or watching that sexy lady saunter down the road kinda stuff? I think almost everyone here can predict where the 1080 fast pan is going to leave us...

Fantastic stuff SonicStates! And credit to DanielL too.

Looks fab to me, but the Vibrant + Intelligent Contrast OFF combo seems to crush the blacks quite harshly. I would love to see a daytime (blue sky) footage with every DR enhancing setting turned on.

Thank you for doing this sonicstates!

1600 seems softish and there is definitely some noise/banding here and there... It's not terrible though! and F4! Some faster glass and a few iso stops will do wonders I'm sure.

I simply can't wait to test out my Switar 26/1.1, Angenieux 25/.95 and Soligor 25/.95 now that I see this footage. Very exciting!

It would be nice to see a pan speed average of the two scenarios you suggested and if you could have an object move through the foreground as you pan with the person or object in the distance like a lamp pole or other person. You could also throw in a bourne type pan if you want just to see what it looks like in 1080.

Hey Sonic,

If you could throw in more controlled shooting that would be great. As you mentioned, woman sauntering down street would be nice. Fast pans aren't going to look good so it'd be nice to see some footage shot avoiding that. And daylight would be nice too at 24P. Can you take a locked off wide/establishing shot of a location? I'd like to see how well the codec holds up when you're NOT trying to break it.

Issac, no probs...I'll be out and about tomorrow...praying to the weather gods for a respite from this 3 day (so far) rain spell.

In other news, I was just working on a song in my studio so broke out the GH1 for some FHD footage...shot a couple of takes with different (slightly) settings...will get some more "open" and outside shots as promised tomorrow. AND it will all be uploaded COMPLETELY untouched...including any deleting (BRICKTOP: "and I DO mean this time")

Until then,
Sam

GreGory - I'm not sure about the blue sky (grey might have to do) but let me play around with the settings

Mico - Roger that

Thank you for posting the clips.

Is there a way of seeing them on a MAC G5?

SonicStates you rule! It would be really awesome to see some raw clips w/ all settings in Manual and no zooming. It seems that continuously adjusting multiple settings overburdens the camera, and the image is degraded as the result.

Using auto-anything is usually not recommended in any professional applications since that takes creative control from the shooter. Finally, total manual control over video is by far the biggest advantage this cam has over the 5d so lets see what it can do!

Here's what I'd love to see (if anyone agrees or has any suggestions, please speak up):

In a controlled environment (with minimal light changes), set up a tripod and focus the camera on a group of colorful objects w/ lots of detail(s). Set everything to manual, (including WB, focus, ISO, etc.), and select the most normal mode (no vivid etc.,) Adjust aperture so that the least amount of the image is blown out. Shoot 10 sec clips of the following:

1 static wide @ lowest ISO @ 1080/24
1 wide pan @ lowest ISO @ 1080/24
1 static CU @ lowest ISO @ 1080/24
1 CU rack focus @ lowest ISO @ 1080/24
1 CU pan @ lowest ISO @ 1080/24
1 static wide @ highest ISO @ 1080/24
1 wide pan @ highest ISO @ 1080/24
1 static CU @ highest ISO @ 1080/24
1 CU rack focus @ highest ISO @ 1080/24
1 CU pan @ highest ISO @ 1080/24

1 static wide @ lowest ISO @ 720/60
1 wide pan @ lowest ISO @ 720/60
1 static CU @ lowest ISO @ 720/60
1 CU rack focus @ lowest ISO @ 720/60
1 CU pan @ lowest ISO @ 720/60
1 static wide @ highest ISO @ 720/60
1 wide pan @ highest ISO @ 720/60
1 static CU @ highest ISO @ 720/60
1 CU rack focus @ highest ISO @ 720/60
1 CU pan @ highest ISO @ 720/60

Then, compress and upload the folder untouched. I think that will provide a really comprehensive look at the camera. Thanks in advance!
