Nice Settings document found

Re: Nice Settings document found

sure thing, the best of all is I have not had the honor of using this camera yet, and probably know the manual inside out !!!

My first opertunity to use the DVX (I have to hire, since it is R40 000 in South Africa, about $6 150 at the current exchange rate) is the second week in September, I can't wait !!! After everything I've seen on this site about the camera !!

This web site is an extremely helpfull website, allready know what to try, and what to avoid with the camera !!

LOVE THIS SITE !!!

Re: Nice Settings document found

Thanks, those articles were great. They cleared up a lot of questions I had regarding the settings.

I have one question for the experts, though. Here's a quote: "...the point at which the blacks hit 0 IRE without crushing."

What does it mean when you "crush" the blacks? I'm guessing that it's when dark grays are turned to black. Is that right?

Re: Nice Settings document found

As far as I understand, crushing the black means when you loose your detail and the black becomes a solid black (like washed out white).

Please correct me If I am wrong.

Thanks,
Derrick

Re: Nice Settings document found

That's correct. Crushing the blacks means that any detail in the shadow cannot be retreived is post color correction if it has been crushed upon capture.

Re: Nice Settings document found

A minor quibble: The menu document claimed, "In the movie theater, film is projected at 48 frames per second due to a shutter in the projector." :o That's not true. Maybe something got lost in translation. Film *is* projected at 24 frames per second. However, each frame is shown for 1/48th a second. I used to be a projectionist. :)

Re: Nice Settings document found

Many film projectors are 2 bladed so they project each frame twice (48fps) to cut down on visible flicker.

Re: Nice Settings document found

Yeah, right, either way that's 24 frames of film per second.

I know I'm being anal. :-/

Re: Nice Settings document found

Lots of projectors have three-bladed shutters as well. The frames get updated 24 times per second, but those same frames will be flashed two or three times on the screen to reduce the flicker of when the shutter is closed.

So while there are 48 or 72 flashes of frames per second, the fact remains that there are only 24 UNIQUE frames per second. The film advances through the projector at the rate of 24fps.

Re: Nice Settings document found

Yeah, I was just getting stuck on semantics. The quote I decided to make a federal case out of ("film is projected at 48 frames per second") could be interpreted different ways.

Re: Nice Settings document found

One of the LAFCPUG pages talks about overexposure in video. The poster recommends underexposure to keep detail in the highlights. But I find that underexposure leads to noise, sometimes a lot of noise. I try to underexpose a bit but you have to be careful or you'll create a lot of noise in the blacks. There are times when I'd rather give up highlight detail than create excessive noise. Take all the info on the net with a grain of salt and test for yourself.

Re: Nice Settings document found

Hey Derrick how are things back home?
I've been gone for about 3 years now but am hoping to make the move back pretty soon. Really want to shoot a doci in Madagascar.

Really good to see the sa flag pop up in this forum.

:adam: ;)
