Nice Review of the O7Q

Watching it now. Useful.

1) touch screen controls - gloves? Cold? wet hands?
2) will need screen shade - how will one touch the screen?

Yes, a stylus will work. Using the touchscreen on the Odyssey is the same as using one on any tablet or smartphone. There are gloves available now which allow you to still use your hands.

I would never operate a cam even with a pen or pencil in my pocket - the sunshade will need to be at least as deep as small hd to work.. This stylus will need to be 8in long

Maybe you could use an iPhone in the future to operate this device.
The Odyssee7Q is equiped with Bluetooth, any idea about why?

I'm puzzled as to why this is an issue with this monitor, in particular....? Or is it all 7" monitors?

Personally I've never seen a colour monitor that can work well in direct sunlight.

Well I have a super expensive Transvideo that is pretty good in the sun but that is not really relevant.

Indeed most affordable monitors need a big sunshade to work out doors - I rarely take my SmallHD sunshade off at all.

Mix that with a need for touch screen and you have a condratictory set up.

My Small HD for example has its two buttons (which are small crap and annoying and totally non tactile) set up for focus mag and zebras they are the only functions I use -if the monitor has other useful functions I dont use them as they are 'trapped' in the menu and the is no time of set for menu digging.

The Ody offers so many more fantastic features but having them on touch screen buried deep in a sunshade is far from ideal, as is the inability to operate in gloves or to keep a stylus in your pocket which to me presents a significant risk of injury to the operator - I go clean - no pens, no coins, nothing on my person while operating, for speed , simplicity and safety of crew and gear..

Mix the poor ext monitor info fed by the SonyF3 (no histos for example) It would be so so cool to be able to effortlessly 'peddle' though the fantastic functionality that the Ody offers..

I am curious why a stylus or a pen or even your car keys would be dangerous. I almost always have wallet, keys phone (on silent mode, no vibe if audio is recorded), a notepad, extra batteries, lens pen and a felt tip marker as well as a leatherman, micro cloth, ID and press pass, white card etc... Either in my production vest or my cargo pants.

I keep the stylus for the 7Q hanging on the tape hook on my 700. And I have a spare in my shirt pocket.

Somehow I have avoided injury since the 70's while shooting, neither have I hurt any production crew. Maybe I am just lucky.

All kidding aside, Have a great X-mas or Holiday Season.

Im 45% joking but not really.

A pen or the like particularly in the top pocket of trousers can make a really nasty jab if you sit down wrong. Mainly Im free of coins if I slip a filter or lens in my pockets, and also to not jangle and create an audio footprint. I was injured once but that was outside a courthouse in a press scrum by someone convicted of a violent act. Now if I do something like that Im all over the 300.

I just think most filming kit is designed in a vacuum. It would be nice to see some real ergonomics in film kit.

Every little annoyance is small in itself, but the all the annoyances and seconds lost add up. Like checking batt levels, Vlock and EXbatts have level check, FS batts do not.. little niggles add up.

In a future firmware update, the F1 & F2 buttons (yes, physical, tactile buttons) on the side of the Odyssey7Q will be user addressable so that you can access certain controls without utilizing the touch screen. Currently they are used for Screen Lock and Power Down.

There is a Bluetooth antenna in the Odyssey7Q. When our programmer completes the Apps, the Odyssey7Q will be controllable from any iPhone, iPad or Android device. This person is working separate from the rest of our development team, as App programming is a particular skillset.

There is also a remote port (RMT) on the side of the Odyssey7Q. Once enabled, this will allow a wired device to control multiple functions on the Odyssey7Q.

Anyway, back to the original post of this thread, I think Matt did a great job walking through the Odyssey7Q. He has now also released another video showing the workflow for FS700 RAW footage from the Odyssey7Q, using DaVinci Resolve and FCPX.

Will the RMT port have a public protocol for interfacing with the 7Q, or will it just be for first-party accessories?

Sounds good Mitch.

Btw my rant was on topic as it was matts video that brought the gui to my attention.

also any comment on his comment on the drive release mechanism?

That wired device sounds excellent. I hope it will be both solid and well designed

I'd probably want a single button to cycle through.

clean with lut
lut and wfm
clean with lut
exapanded focus

And of course the other button to be roll.

a third button/jog wheel could be dedicated to focus.

get it right and the shoot experience will be considerably enhanced. Not just for your product but across the board as you can circumvent a lot if crap design done by the camera makers who seem not to understand that hit a button while rolling and not upset the shot is almost impossible - especially if said button is behind your ear!

Yeah, thinking about it that's a bad combo, you're perfectly right. Personally I prefer a touchscreen, with nice clear controls -- like the 7Q seems to have -- to a fiddly little click-wheel (I have the SmallHD too, and agree with you there); and I like the fact that the Odyssey has the controls in the black bars, keeping the screen clear. But touchscreen buttons right at the top, plus a sunshade, will be awkward.

Perhaps an option could be added to move the top bar to the bottom of the screen?

Using a phone as a remote could be very cool, but could also be a little fiddly... you have to hold the phone as well as all the other gear...

Other than that, it looks great, and huge thanks to Matthew for such a detailed technical overview.

Yeah, thinking about it that's a bad combo, .

I always visualise using kit in the more extreme places I have worked.

In my mind I was in a super sunny but freezing ski resort with thick leather gloves trying to hit a setting down in the depths of some gaffa tape monster of a screen shade.

(yes I would tape on the small hd shade in such a situation because you get slits of light otherwise from the little gaps at the front)

Skiing back to base I take a tumble and get stabbed with the stylus. Nice.

FYI, I've just finished three days of shooting with the 7Q in Minnesota. Outside. I've got heavy gloves with touch-enabled material and it worked perfectly fine on the 7Q. I had to be a little more careful to ensure I was hitting the right spot but didn't really have any issues. For the record, it was about -20F with wind chill today. So anyone nay-saying the "gloves" thing, I can tell you first hand that it works just fine.
