GH4 Nice GH4 Camera Rigging

Nice and simple. It looks like he has a remote trigger/ handle set up. Any experience with these on a GH series camera? Who makes a good one?

My favorite triggered grip for the GH cameras is KinoGrip's. I use it in conjunction with ErgoCine's bracket & Sphere. Wood grips are so much nicer in the hand than other materials & it's great to be able to use the same ergonomic set on numerous cameras.

ErgoCine also makes a lovely Aaton-style triggered grip but doesn't offer cables compatible with the GH.

For documentary work with the GH3 I had a shoulder rig with external EVF & brick battery, but due to the much improved EVF, with peaking, built into the GH4 I haven't been using it.

Instead I've been using just the GH4, (soon to be discontinued) Pocket Rig, wood grips, & Panasonic mic. This setup requires no HDMI cable & is so much easier to transport, build, & breakdown. When I go this route I've been skipping the entire Carnet process, & Work Visa, instead slipping across borders like a tourist.

The Kino grip is a thing of beauty, but the price of admission- yikes. :-0

Are you shooting with IS when using the pocket rig? If not, do you get any micro jitters or can you shoot relatively fluidly?

Mostly with OIS but also with 12, 17, & 25mm primes. Just tested 35mm without OIS & while slightly less stable didn't experience micro-jitters.

Although Edelkrone is discontinuing the Pocket Rig they are releasing other Pocket products that will offer similar functionality. I'm interested in the Pocket Support for running even more compact & if I like it may pickup the Pocket Rods as backup to the Rig's. May even checkout the Pocket Handles to replace the wood grips for some stealth setups, but generally prefer my hands closer to the camera.

How do you use the Ergocine's bracket & Sphere with the kinogrip? To what i could see, it's not possible to order the bracket and sphere without the grip from Ergo? Something at around 700$... crazy beautifull now.. Could you tell please?

How do you attach the all to a edelkrone pocket-rig?

Cheers,

Ergocine will sell just the bracket, &/or Sphere. They've always responded to my inquires quickly. I suggest picking up their thick canvas storage bag that fits the built grips too.

KinoGrip just started offering mounting hardware, including Vocas' brackets, & has plans to offer a version of the Sphere.

If your primarily planing on using the KinoGrip on a Pocket Rig consider ordering a shorter cable. KinoGrip's owner Ray is also great with communication & will customize most anything he offers. My cables are about 5.5" as I mount the grips only 3" from the baseplate.

The Pocket Rig has 15mm LWS rails that are 5" long & the bracket clamps onto those.

One thing to be aware of with the Pocket Rig is it can flex a bit when mounted on sticks. This hasn't troubled me much, & I imagine the new series will not flex, but last I heard won't be readily available until sometime in June.

Lastly here are a couple of blog post about both companies.

While certainly not cheap I do think either companies grips are relatively inexpensive compared to many other professional options. My O-Grips cost $2000 & do not offer a trigger.

Over the years I've been thru numerous grips & much prefer short ones that keep my hands close to the lens. If I have a heavy camera, such as a built out Alexa with Cabrio zoom, I occasionally use grips with longer handles, but only with a dedicated focus puller. If I'm pulling my own focus, or zoom, I always go for short grips.

My main issue with long handles is the camera often wobbles whenever reaching for the lens. My other issue is the handles make the setup bulky & hard to move around, or get low, especially in confined &/or crowded spaces. If you have the crew & time this isn't much of an issue, but moving fast on set is always appreciated these days.

Aaton's cameras are shooters' cameras & their ergonomic wood grips are one of Jean-Pierre Beauviala's most ingenious designs.

The new Pocket Series (except for the slider) is available now at Edelkrone USA - I ordered a 'Support' and 'Rods' units - They shipped out last Friday via 2nd day Air - so i won't be getting them until Wed. I don't know what they haven't let everyone know that they are shipping already.

So, any idea which grip/controller is being used in the video? looks like it has start/stop and a host of other functions.

Thanks for the update! Emailed them not long ago & was told June.

Just ordered the Support but due to a website glitch couldn't add the Handles. Ordered from their USA site & was only offered UPS Groud shipping.

You have to email them and they will send you an invoice for 2nd day or next day - was 25$ or 50$ going to L.A.

I just don't see much use to these hand grips unless they have a trigger build in.
That said, when rigging and the cam is on your shoulder, a handgrip at the front side of the rig (with trigger) is great.

With some of these combinations I see, I would rather just use the cameras grip including trigger and custom buttons...

We have finished the KinoGrip wooden ball. Uses a standard Arri rosette so it mounts to any Arri compatible hardware. The first batch is walnut, but we may do some in cherry and mahogany. Here are a few pics of the prototype. Will be available for sale starting tomorrow 6/1 at www.KinoGrip.com

Do you have any pictures of your grips being used in complete camera rig ?

i.e. pictures of a DSLR set-up, pictures of FS700 set-up, etc...

It would be very useful to see what the final result is like when the grips are on a complete rig.
