Hi Mitch,

I remember that it was previously mentioned that there might be another update prior to or around IBC, just wondering if we're still on track for that, and what you can divulge as to what we can expect in this update? Dual stream recording, prores 4444 perhaps?? :)

It is going to include Dual-Stream Monitoring and Recording. It will also include some other things but we're not announcing that quite yet. We expect this one to be in the September-October timeframe.

Dual-Stream Monitoring
Dual-Monitoring will be included for free in the next firmware update.

Dual-Stream Monitoring allows one to view two HD signals at the same time while recording one of them in Apple ProRes. The images can be viewed as Picture-in-Picture, Side-by-Side, or Top-Bottom. In PiP, tap the smaller image to swap them. One can also select to just view one or the other image full screen. Dual-Stream Monitoring can be used to monitor a B-camera while operating the A-camera. Additionally, many cameras offer multiple outputs, one "clean" video and one with viewfinder information overlays. The Odyssey7Q+ can be set to record the clean version while the OLED displays the viewfinder version for operating.

Dual-Stream Monitoring works with any mix of HD video signals, but no 4K, no RAW.

Dual-Stream Recording
Dual-Stream Recording will be included as part of the Odyssey RAW Bundle in the next firmware update. This is a change to the NAB announcement for Dual-Stream Recording that listed it as a separate $995 option.

Dual-Stream Recording allows simultaneous recording of two HD video signals, no 4K, no RAW. These signals must match (i.e. 1080p29.97). The two signals can be displayed the same ways as in Dual-Stream Monitoring.

Wow that's awesome, very useful. This is exactly why I got the 7q/7q+, it keeps on getting better at doing things nothing else on the market does. I think this is a smart move since it makes the raw bundle even more of a no brainer and sells more of those and more 7qs as opposed to just selling a few specialty add on licenses. This keeps the 7q very competitive.

Does this affect the quad-stream recording plans? Will that still be an extra license? Maybe a less expensive license?

We honestly have not yet determined this. It partly depends on how difficult completing this task turns out to be.

Mitch whats the point in dual recording?
It's like getting two recorders in one! Here are two common uses:

- A two camera shoot where you want the record formats to match. Maybe it's an interview and one camera is pointed at the subject and the other at the interviewer. Or one camera is getting the main head-on shot of the subject and the second is off to one side getting that oddball angle of the subject every producer asks for these days. Both are recorded simultaneously in matching Apple ProRes files.

- A car rig with a couple of mini lipstick cameras, such as the tiny guys from Marshall. When you're in a car space is always a premium, so getting two recordings on one device is a good thing.

I'm sure y'all can come up with a bunch more uses. A guy doing legal depositions looked like he was going to kiss me when I explained it to him. He's been carrying around a hefty pile of gear to do essentially the same thing.

Thats great!! Can it also be used as a switcher so you can toggle and choose which footage you want between the two cameras and record to the one file as this could save time editing in post later?

What I need is to be able to monitor 4 camera inputs and record either one or two camera. And I would prefer being able to choose which input to record. Are these possible with an update to my existing 7Q?
with the dual recording update coming soon, can I have 4 cameras connected and choose which 2 to monitor (and record)?
Thanks, James

You know now that you've explained dual recording it sounds so simple and why didn't I think of it. But I never thought you'd be able to record with say FS700 and A7s at the same time and record into the one unit!

Love CD.

Such functionality will come later. What you can do in the next update is:

monitor 4, record none (it's done this from the beginning)
monitor two, record one (this is at no additional cost)
monitor two, record two (this is included in the RAW Bundle)

Other functionality will come in the future.

Thanks for the love.

Just so we're clear, the Dual-Stream is strictly for HD video signals. No 4K, no RAW. Those two cameras can output HD, but they can also output other stuff. Just want to make sure we're clear.

I've posted this elsewhere so figured I should mention it here on DVXUSER.

The upcoming firmware update for the Odyssey7Q+ will include two unannounced features. These are functionality that we have never stated would be a part of the Odyssey, and they are included at no additional cost. They both apply to the Odyssey7Q+ and to the Odyssey7Q. There is even something for the Odyssey7 as well.

These two unannounced features are in addition to features that we have announced. And there is at least one feature included that we have announced previously but we have not stated that it would be a part of this firmware update.

We had hoped to get this firmware update completed and released in September but the necessary work on the patch release pushed us back into October. This firmware is currently in testing (and no, don't PM me asking if you can beta test it).
