I thought it might be a good idea to have the next DVXuser film contest a documentary. if for no other reason than i luv good documentaries.

Well?

Who's up?

documentary basically got shut down so we avoid things that people already do for a living
So no one on the forum makes genre movies for a living?

I think documentary is a great idea. Would be nice to see what people here can do creatively with reality.

I don't buy the "for a living" argument, I see plenty of indie horror/sci fi stuff online.

now that would be interesting... although technically you could have gone that route with any of the contests and would have had a standout.

judging by the responses to both of those ideas on the other post, I think the quanitity of final projects submitted would be very low. The contest is about getting as many people as possible to make films, so... yeah. lol

damnit, now i cant find it either, lol

dont get me wrong i think documentary would be awesome, but i coulda sworn someone said something about avoiding what people do for a living, like commercials/training videos/documentaries

I'm ALL for documentary.
I think that would be a great idea.
Though I imagine that it woudl get some resistance, as so many of the comments on the Sci Fi pieces revolve around how something was shot (lighting, composition, etc).

A lot of people might feel limited with documentary when it came to imagery.
Of course, I think there are still creative ways around that... just look at Errol Morris's documentaries.

And there are those that push the limits of the genre, like Mule Skinner Blues. :)

(I know, I know...no one but me has ever seen it. :( )

You've mentioned it enough times though - it's on my list.

No documentary. Let's keep it genre based.

I can see watching 50 documentary's getting really boring really quick.

.02 :/

I feel documentary filmmakers are a special breed...and I respect what they do.

I just wouldn't want a documentary in my portfolio personally, because that's not the direction I am trying to go professionally.

Also, it would be inevitable that one of the DVXUser commandments would be broken...Thou shall not discuss politics.

IMHO only of course.

Excellent point. And perhaps the most compelling reason to avoid it.

Alright - I'll give you the political issue, that's a good point.
As far as not wanting a documentary in your portfolio - well.... I don't know how many of us wanted zombie or sci fi pieces in our portfolios either
:)

But the political issue is a good point.
Alright, fine.... no documentary.

How about a comedy?

Its hard to write a comedy..which would really put your writing skills to the test.

Not specifically perhaps, Luis...
But (for myself anyway) a showcase of the widest possible range of dramatic films.
I wanna run the gambit of genres, my man.;)

As for the next Fest, I'll quote myself on the subject:

...The bottom line is we (for the most part) want to make films that would be viable additions to our portfolio. As many of you know, you may be hard pressed to find a more passionate fanatic for Film Noir than I...

...I think (until we run out of them) we should use the broadest genres and sub-genres possible. We should probably steer clear of micro-genres like Noir and Kung-Fu.

We still have:
-Romance
-Action
-Adventure
-Mystery
-Crime
-Horror
-Sports
-Comedy
-Fantasy
and
-Western

to work our way through (should keep us busy for a while, no?)

Mystery sounds pretty good to me. It gives a wide enough creative path to make most people happy, I would think.

Comedy will work its way into every fest, no matter what.

And I wouldnt even want to hear all the butchered "western" accents. :D We'd have to give extra points for those who used dialogue coaches.

Mystery wouldnt be too "chick-ish" for the guys here, either. :)

My thoughts, as if they matter, nix any "Horror" or "Comedy" ideas (been done and funnies will be done every time like thartley said). And no "Sporks" either. I don't think we'd get much turn-out for "Romance" or "Western" either.

What about "Action/Adventure" for the next one?

Oh wait, or "Instructional"!!!!!
