Next camera, 5D-3 ML raw or Sony A7SII w/ext. recorder ?

Slog3 is drastically better than slog2: it allows for two stops better DR. But slog3 on the a7S II is not properly implemented, and ends up giving no advantage at all (same DR as slog2), it's just a waste of codec color space (that some may want to go for if they're going to cut the footage with, say, FS7 footage).

I meant to say slog3 on the a7sii, in comparison to slog2 from a7s or a7sii.

I haven't touched an a7S II. I had an a7S for 18 months, and I've read the very detailed a7S II tests that paulcurtis posted here.

If you don't have to have a second camera right away, I would save my money and wait.
Yup no hurry anymore. Now it's a matter of what you want and not what you need. I've been using the G7 because it's all I need for the moment and just adding on to me future proof lens collection. There are many cameras I want, but if I've learned one thing over the last year or 2 it's wait and see. It may be the case where I went from HD to 4K for $600 and the next upgrade may be 6K for $699. The truth is there is no camera out now that I can't make money with, and that is the name of the game for me.

Completely aggree. I've been using the RX100 IV because it's all I need for the moment. The only limitation it puts on me is that it's deep-DoF-only most of the time, but I'm actually enjoying that lately. On my budget (<$3K) I could get a full frame sensor, half a stop better DR, better AF, better low-light abilities, etc, but not all of those on the same camera (and it would be a much bigger camera, probably also slower to shoot with, among other things because I'd lose the internal ND filter).

I'd consider upgrading if I could get either internal 4K at 60 fps with the same DR I have now, or a couple stops of better DR (i.e. slog3 as seen on the FS7, not on the a7S II or the a6300).

If you want raw, then instead of troublesome ML raw, put yourself down for a Blackmagic Design Micro Cinema Camera (BMMCC). Easier to use and more futures! (ProRes too! Global shutter! Or 60fps FHD!)

If you want another reason to use your Atomos Assassin then get a Sony F3 (goes for sub $2k, cheaper than an A7s mk2!), you'll also get insane lowlight ability from that and even better 60fps 10bit 422 (ProRes HQ) from it as well! Plus XLR inputs, and ND filters.

(sources: me! I own a BMPCC and F3)

Great low light performance, clean image up to at least iso 3200 or so. Minimum of 60fps in 1080 or higher. My GH4 offers slow mo which I have no complaints about. The low light capabilities is it's main drawback for me.

F3 gives you all of that and more :)

My take is that, for someone already with a 4K external recorder, ~ $800 retail difference between A7S and A7SII may be hard to justify.

This. Absolutely this. Even if you didn't own a recorder, I'd still find the price of an A7s mk2 vs mk1 hard to justify.

I read many places slog3 isn't drastically better than slog2, and probably would shoot in slog2 regardless. I'm not esctatic about 120fps, plus it's cropped to 2.2. So 1080-60p is still a good to me.

So I guess version 1 is the one to go with, maybe it's just me but a7sii is just newer, which is why I'm leaning toward that side. I don't know.

slog3 is too aggressive, only worth your time if you're shooting 10bit or better. But there is no way at all that the A7s mk2 can even do that.

So for 95% of us having slog3 in the A7s mk2 is sadly just a bit of a marketing gimmick.
