NEX5 review idea

Is interesting and video footage is good, but you cant lock anything in video, there's not even a ae-lock override. There is definately no mud in the 1080p/i footage and even if they just added ae-l that carried over from the PASM modes, then the vari-nd could be used for final tweaking of the exposure, but no, Sony said no need for ae-l? so yes I am very interested indeed if you can at least offer an ae-l hack.

Go for it, I would definately prefer this.

Agree, Barry's test

Agree, Barry's test

will be very worthwhile, aliasing-moire will be interesting.

As you note the form factor is great and the aps-c sensor and dynamic range should put it ahead of m43, plus the af and theoretically better implemented codec make it very interesting. Also, they have a IR remote for it too. All in all it ticks the boxes, but needs a few more manual controls for video that's all.

I read that the nex5 would be using a aps-c sensor the same as canon's lineup. Would the flange distance play a role? I don't know anything about this but red some threads.

I believe the problem with the Canons are the fact that they have a mirror that gets in the way. The NX5 does not have one. So I think it would be very adaptable like the GH-1 currently is.

I have some quite strange and not ordinary idea that appeared from previous NEX threads.

What if we could have independant NEX5 review made by two completely different people.

I suggest to start donation company to buy Sony NEX5.

After (and if :-) ) neccessary money will be collected we'll buy NEX5 kit and send it to Barry Green for good review and to shoot something useful. All this tech sites are fine but professional opinion, usage in real tasks is much more important.
After Barry completes his review he'll send NEX to me for very low level tests (photo and video coder related, all compared to GH1 and GF1 in precisely controlled conditions), I also plan to completely disassembly it and show all photos. If firmware update will be hackable we could also try to implement some simple adjustments.

I don't think you'll find much interest for this, as the NEX 5 only supports a 60i frame rate and no 720p60. It's not really a viable option for many of us here as is, so it doesn't make sense to throw additional money at it to try and maybe possibly make it a little more suitable.

Maybe the sensor doesn't have slight banding effects of the GH1 when your shooting with an ISO of at least 500 or more but it looks like in broad daylight the GH1 will have noticeably less Moire and Aliasing.

Anyway, theirs been a lot of native videos online which I've downloaded and here's one from Vimeo.

For sure, I'd definitely pick an NEX5 over the GF1 since the GF1's 720 60p mode is really 30 frames per second recorded twice and theirs no move-able screen. Still, I'd expect the successor of the GF1 to be out this year and what's really going to be interesting is the NEX7 going up against the successor of the GH1.

Bird in the hand

is worth 2 in the bush(GH1+NEX7, LOL).

Like you tester the NEX5 is interesting, 3d stills capability may carry over to video, who knows, plus the mp4 files I bet you could ramp that bit rate right up and mod the frame rate?

The NEX5 is an excellent choice for a hack, but the moire could be an issue agreed.
